I think you get 16 gig to play around with on the old 360 Pro HDD's and 4 is locked for programming, etc. I remember having more than 13 gig left when mine kicked the bucket last week.
So that after you turn off via the power button on the front if you aren't going to be using it for a while you can kill the power to the system so that you don't add kilowatt hours to your electric bill. Same as the PS2.
