since then my pc seems to be working fine after removing one of my two HDDs and switching the power connector on one of them. I should put the second hdd back in to test the theory but im a little scared to push my clearly substandard PSU.

so i just built a whole new pc last night and it had been working just fine for hours but it suddenly locked up and now it will barely even boot, let lone run windows. This is only the second pc i've built so i don't really know what I'm doing and I need some help identifying where the problem is.

Intel Q6600 w/ Tuniq Tower
ASUS Rampage Formula x48 mobo
G.Skill 2GB x 2 DDR2 800
ABS Tagan BZ Series BZ800 800W PSU
XFX geforce 8800GT
running Vista Ultimate 32bit

Im not really sure what's the most important information here so I guess I'll just relay most of what happened with my machine:

anyways the system was running fine for hours then some time when i wasn't looking, either right before or right after installing itunes, it just totally locked up. So i did a hard reset but once it came back on, no signal was being sent to my monitors so i shut it down again and when the system came back the next time it seemed to be fine, I chose "starts windows normally" but the screen just went black and nothing happened so i had to shut it off again. i tried running windows using the last known working config, but after a minute or two in vista i got an error screen that i didn't get a chance to read before the system shut it self down. It probably wasnt a smart idea to continue . . . but i did. I tried turning it back on a couple more times. usually either the monitors didnt even turn on, it would start booting and then hang on a black screen or hang on the . . . i dunno what to call it, the mobo startup graphic.

The voltage indicator LEDs on my mobo for my cpu, ram, nb, & sb were all green most of the time i was trying to get my system to start up, but towards the end sometimes the CPU voltage LED would be black and ram, nb, and sb LEDs would show very high voltages. I don't really know what that would mean but I think it's worth pointing out . . .

I have a feeling my issue is fairly obvious but, like I said I really don't know much at all about hardware so I wouldn't know

any help would be extreeemely appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, thanks a lot guys. Really Helpful.

I'll have to hold off on upgrading my GPU for a few months though. Don't really have the money at the moment.

Hey, I'm gonna be building a new PC soon, but I don't know a lot about hardware, and almost nothing about power supplies, so I was wondering if you guys could take a look at this list and tell me if looks good and how big of a power supply i'll want for it. Cause I definitely dont want to hinder the performance of my machine by getting one that's not powerful enough. Or waste too much money on that's more power than I need.

Intel Q6600

XFX GeForce 8800GT (already owned)

ASUS Rampage Formula Intel X48 Mobo

G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2 800

Tuniq Tower 120 (eh, why not?)

Thanks

a modular power supply is just one that has detahcable cables to reduce clutter inside your case.

Yeah, I know, but it's not me so I don't have a say. He's gotta work with what he's got I suppose.

Hey, my friend is looking for a new laptop with a price limit of $1400. My small hardware knowledge is limited to desktops so i was wondering if someone could help me find a good laptop. He says he wants to use it for gaming, so we wanna find one with the best possible performance for the price. Thanks.

I probably can't afford to spend over 200. But that should be enough, right?
