I agree with your point that WOW holds your hand a lot more than it should. The thing I dig about FF XIV is that if you want to get to where it's fun to play, ya gotta earn the skills necessary through grinding. A key component to RPG games. Frustrated about how you want to have more skills? Quit yer belly-achin' and earn them! Grind fool!
