Fundamentally when a character is supposed to be you, is it really a great idea to have them speaking?

The "non-speaking" protagonist is a classic & enduring tool used to improve immersion.

You can think whatever you want without being forced to disagree with your onscreen self!

Also, from a practical angle, the lead character would have many, MANY times more lines to record than any other character so this saves time, money & space in development.

Agree with many here, Nintendo makes a huge amount of money from "Casual". The top 7 best selling games this year are ALL Nintendo!

Why should they bother investing the millions it would take to develop cutting edge new IP in RTS / RPG / FPS when they really, REALLY don't need to!

To be fair, to achieve ANY sort of sex in the game requires a very large and deliberate effort, is not necessary to complete the game, and leaves sexual preference totally open to the player. Of the 10 teams at the Wardens' Quest Event not a single one managed to get any character relationship that far, despite there being a specific prize and large point bonus for doing so (precisely because it requires a fair bit of effort to achieve).
