Kind of funny that everyone thought they would go down to $222 after the 21st and instead they went up to $320! I wonder how long the other guys are going to be able to sell for that price if Newegg raised theirs.

Plus I'm sure they never ran out. They just marked them as "out of stock" while the decided what the new price would be and then put them back in stock once they got the price changed.

Newegg has an automated inventory system that adjusts prices higher as demand grows. If something goes out of stock the price becomes pretty high. It would be one hellva feat to have people sitting there adjusting prices by hand for the millions of products they sell :)

Perhaps but the Q6600 is going to be one of their most in demand products on their whole site. It would also be quite feat if they sat back and let an automated inventory system set the price of their single hottest item! You don't think they had a few dozen board meetings to launch and set the price on the Q6600??

There is no way they are letting some computer systems control the price of this item alone.

They need to just set the price once like any normal retailer would and the system takes over from there. What would be a feat of having an automated system ajust price based on orders going out the door? It's a computer system after all :)

Just take one look at their site, you can sort items by any imaginable way. Try doing that on any other site...

Again that may be the way they handle most of their products but on such a high profile, huge demanded item like the Q6600 the inventory system would just be a suggestion and you can bet that the finale price was/is scrutinized and decided upon buy a group of people with business pricing degrees not just some computer system. You make it sound like the Newwgg CEO woke up this morning and went into work and said "well what do you know our automated inventory system automatically raised the price on the Q6600 $20 over night... isn't that interesting!" LOL

Actually you are making it sound like the Newegg CEO woke up this morning and did that :) I merely stated that does indeed raise and lower the price on a demand ie ordered basis. Go ahead and track items that are in stock and compare them to the cost as they go out of stock ;)

I'm sure they have people checking prices against other websites or maybe they just use price watch to see if they are pricing to high initially, but I highly doubt some guy in a cubical is going 'hey we can gouge everyone for another $50'. THat is after all what ebay is for ;)

If they were to adjust the pricing for this CPU manually it would disrupt their automated system. It's important to a large company - especially one that deals solely online, where news travels so fast - that they maintain consistency with their methods. Newegg is not quite a giant evil corperation attempting to finesse an extra $50 out of you. Just wait an extra week or two for their stock to be replenished and the price will be back down.

Edit: Also notice they limit 5 per customer. Further evidence of a lower supply of the processors, and an effort to make them more widespread.
