True I was being a bit over zealous in no one would play that way but it's obvious Kevin is no competitive MP aficionado from this and many of his other reviews. To where Destiny's game design is heavily weighted that way. The way loot progression works and character development is designed is to not upset the balance in that aspect of the game. Which is where Destiny will find its fan base and where I think most people who like the game are, not commenting here like me just cause I have a job with down time that let's me follow the thread on my phone. Most comments will be disproportionately skewed to those who don't like it cause they felt the need to come express it in lieu of playing the game in their free time. All of them upset over the same thing as you mentioned. The age old problem of these games, Carebear dragon slayers vs. Pvpers. No one has yet to figure out how to please both. Destiny appears to have decided to cater to the Pvpers since that is where their strength and history lies. So the story is simply a thin premise for the MP to exist which is all Pvpers need. Which I guess reflects the score of 6 as I'd give it a 4 on story/pve elements, but an 8 on MP.

Well I've put about the same amount of time into the game, 40 or so hours, and can agree the repetitive criticism applies to the games "patrol missions," But not to the rest. While the story missions are nothing new and innovative they are not as drab as he makes it out. They felt pretty much like Halo, with yes Dinklage bot definitely not as good as cortana, but the same exact format was there. The bosses are better than anything in borderlands too. They are not merely bullet sponges. They have weak spots that you can target which then initiat other behaviors when destroyed. Not innovative but still more than Kevin implied.

The biggest problem is that no one will play the game like Kevin appears to have. It is all fluidly integrated so that you do a story mission or two then jump into some crucible matches then back. Then some buddies log on so you do a strike together. Thats where the variety comes. I only do patrol missions if I pick up a bounty that requires them for rep points. Pretty standard mmo fair, daily rep grind stuff. So you are not forced to slog through them to level up or advance the story they simply augment the game. They act more like a free play/explore mode than a core feature. Nice because they give you something to do while you go back and explore the world you may have missed or overlooked playing the story missions because you were too distracted by enemies.

Exactly! Same with rpg, go here whack crap until you level up. Then go whack more stuff with a skill that does the same thing just different name. Rinse and repeat. If it's fun the repetition is actually great. Never hear anyone complaining about repetitively having sex. So it matters whether the repetition is fun or not. Repetition in and of itself isn't necessarily bad.

True the score may be the same but my point still stands. Reviewers still don't seem to know what to make of these hybrid games as do gamers in general. Do you evaluate it on the rpg aspects or the fps aspects or some sort of composite. As there were things Destiny got dinged for that other shooters wouldn't because they were rpg elements being held to traditional rpg standards.

Repetitive gameplay? Please find me a game without repetitive gameplay or anything in life that isn't repetitive. Life is repetitive and we are creatures of habit. Now I understand some games are more so than others but no game truly has that much variety. Games are based on a formula which by nature is repetitive that's why there are genres or certain repetitive patterns we group together. So criticism of repetitive needs to be heavily qualified which Kevin didn't do a very good job of.

Your insistence to continue to compare it with Borderlands only further bolsters my claim that people are ignorant of the two games' loot objectives. Borderlands is there to draw you along the story with ever increasing feelings of power and badassery. Destiny must keep loot drops within the realm of being balanced for its competitive multiplayer. It simply can't have shotguns that fire rockets or acid splash triple homing rockets like borderlands because it would be impossible to balance in MP. It is more a matter of small marginal tweaks to your gameplay style as you find loot with the right upgrade perks. That's why defiance is the better comparison.

The Boarderlands comparison actually isn't very good. All those that are doing this are ignoring the glaring lack of competitive MP in Boarderlands and a bunch of other decisively different aims of the two games. The best comparison is probably Defiance. Which also scored low. It is just a weird niche that personally I love but appears to not scratch the right itch if you are a rpg or shooter fan. So until it gets recognized as its own genre I expect scores to be confusing and useless.

Borderlands limitless weapons is an illusion. Don't get me wrong I love those games but the claim that it has so many more weapons isn't as true as it is made out to be. Just cause a gun has stat tweaks and different skin doesn't mean it plays any different than another. Boarder lands really only has about 20 weapons once all that is accounted for.

Expectations Expectations Expectations. Every one knows CoD and BF will be the same rehashed crap, so long as they have new graphics and maps they get an 8 or 9. Destiny, well that wasn't the expectation for it. I even about put it down because it wasn't what I expected. But I kept at it and found once I accepted Destiny for what it was rather than what I expected it is a great game!

The repetitive criticism is funny. Please name a multi player game that isn't repetitive. I remember when Halo got all the great reviews bungie response was we just try and create 10 to 15 seconds of great game play then allow you to experience that in different settings and scenarios. Destiny still does that. CoD and others use the same formula. But again the expectations was for something else.

Sure it has some short comings, your ghost isn't nearly as compelling a sidekick as cortana. Enemy variety could be better. You don't have the same sense of gravity from the enemies that the covenant and flood had in Halo. But honestly I have more fun fighting Destiny's baddies than Halo's the flood and brutes got way more repetitive than Destiny's do. At least each new setting brings new enemies.

If you are shooter fan looking for some rpg embellishments Destiny is fantastic. If you are looking for a mmo or rpg with a compelling story then there are better options or better yet go read a book if you really want compelling story. Games are for game play and there Destiny delivers.

@elessarGObonzo @NuarBlack Oh don't get me wrong I think this will be just fine as an MMO. My problem is that it is still going to be an MMO and therefore a waste of time. The MMO craze has held back the RPG genre from developing for over a decade. Especially multi-player or co-op RPGs. RPGs are now either an MMO or a single player story driven stuff that just feels like enhanced action games. Very few if any games have come out recently that tap into that middle ground of cooperative multiplayer that is so dynamic and has much greater potential for both story and gameplay mechanics. The old games that did fall into that category are legendary because of how good they were. Games like Diablo I and II, Secret of Mana, Baldurs Gate 1, 2, and the first Dark Alliance.

Ugh when is the MMO craze going to die. Seriously the genre is retarded, the novelty of playing with hundreds of other people wore off long ago when you finally realize it dilutes the game mechanics and is just a glorified zergfest. Nothing will be a WoW killer because no one wants to get involved in another time sink like it again. People Still clinging to WoW are just suffering from the sunk cost fallacy anyway. If the combat is as it sounds and it is a tab target and hotkey system trust me it won't feel any different than WoW in the long run.

The difficulty complaint is funny. Sure it was poor form on Capcom's part but a whole 3 points? Only way you are only level 50 by the end of the main game is if you rush through it. I was level 70 something when I reached the Everfall. So throw in some loot hunting in there and some Ur Dragon runs I was 100+ easy. I will welcome the difficulty spike since the game was getting too easy anyway. This is even more frustrating considering his Dark Souls review since that games difficulty pacing is far from consistent.
