Well, I am a total fan of both series I've finished 10 Final Fantasy games already (5-10, 12, tactics, war of the lions, tactics advance) and only 4 of tales games already (phantasia, destiny, symphonia and abyss) just because tales games are in different platforms like nintendo ds, xbox, wii and other more which i don't have and are very costly consoles. BUT i have to say it will be Abyss. It's a different game for me with the complete 3d effects in all tales games. It is also fun. In twelve I was hard to adapt with final fantasy's new feature because it's not a turn based game but i know you can play a traditional turn based game with it by changing the options but it was different and not fun at all. for me. it's Tales of the Abyss! go luke, tear, guy, jade, natalia and anise! and even all non playable characters!!! haha
well, did you know that Final Fantasy was supposed to be the last game of Square Enix. because square enix was about to be let's say" bankrupt" so they named the game FINAL fantasy because it was supposed to be their FINAL game but since FFI became famous. they again zoomed high. But let's see, tales games until now are still famous. FF games for me, are so much complicated nowadays. I like the battle system before than now because it became like an online battle system game. but Tales games are still good for me. and FF too. that's why I'm both a fan of them.
