I really liked Gears a lot because it was refreshing, lot's of fun, cool single player,...but for me the multiplayer was not what I expected. I hated the fact that the shotgun was/is too powerful up close and in many of the challenges it would be the only weapon you would use.
And that's where halo 3 makes the difference for me, the single player portion is comparable, but the multiplayer is far more expanded and more fun to play and keep playing! So my vote goes to Halo 3!

If you like racing-games you should surely check out Forza Motorsport 2. You'll be spending a lot of hours playing this game.
Bioshock is also a must-have, but since you don't want another shooter, maybe you should wait a bit longer getting this game.
