I love my macbook and imac, but that's mainly cause I use for music production purposes, but if you just use a computer for casual internet browsing music and movie watching go for it.

You seem to be completely ignoring the fact that, once again, intense, inescapable grief is much worse than just sitting in a jail cell. It's not as though someone who is rehabilitated is just like, "oh, yeah, I guess what I did was wrong, I'm better now". Why would the knowledge that that intense grief awaits someone if they commit a crime not be an equally large deterrence as the knowledge that they'll go to jail?

Grief is the first step to rehabilitation, and given that the premise of this thread supposes that people have been completely rehabilitated, that would be impossible without the creation of a feeling of grief for what the person did.
