Seconded
What's wrong with him/her (the pic makes me think she's a girl) not liking where he lives and wanting to move out? What's wrong with you people?
Just saying "I hate America, the rest of the world is better, I'm leaving." is annoying. If the TC justified his/her reasoning and said where they planned on moving, I would respect thier opinion a bit more.
I honestly don't get why you "americans" (america happens to be a continent, not a country) are so damn nationalist, I mean, even if she didn't justify her reasoning, why let it get to you like that?
But I'm probably gonna get flamed to death for saying that so it doesn't really matter anymore...
I understand the Americas are a continent and that the name "Americans" usually applies to only those of US residence but there is a reason.
I don't think the Canadians or Mexicans would take is kindly to being called Americans. To them it might seem really rude. Many people enjoy their nationality and while the name Americans may not make much sense as a name logically, its a much better name then "United Statians"
Also TC, America is a beautiful country with mostly nice people, go on a road trip and visit the Grand Canyon, or the Redwoods or check out Luisiana for some good cooking. Just avoid Las Vegas and you'd be all set. Every country is awesome in its own way... well the ones who are not warzones... but if the reason you want to leave is because of being disgruntled with the governemnt then never fear, we got a great voting system to recycle our politicians. Too bad that recycle system is slow as hell...
Anyway, heck you should go on some world tour, enjoy the world for what it offers and maybe when you get back you won't be so disgruntled with your own country.
I feel opptimistic today. :D
I can't say I've gone on a world tour, but every place I've been outside the US (about 10 countries) have all been better. I'm not taking anything for granted, I am simply leaving behind a country that is fundamentally flawed in many ways. I know their are some countries I'd be worse off in, but I have no intention of moving to those places, obviously.
I'd rather not leave America, sure it has problems but the real kicker is trying to fix those problems. People usually leave countries out for safety or family. If you leave a totalian regime that will kill ya I can understand but if you are just disgruntled with a country for a few kinks then you need to re-evaluate your standing.
Instead you should go for the "How can I fix it?" approach. You can take a part in making this country better, go work at a soup kitchen, take a standing position in your community to help people. Actively try to make it a better place. Lead by example. Heck if you are interested in politics become one youreself and actually go for the throat in making it a better country.
Don't become an Expatriote because you are tired of some issues, write your congressman, participate in a protes, do something.
This may sound like a childish cartoon on "how to help" but in reality not many people take part in these activities. I am sure that if people actually did, there would be a much better America. Hell one of the clubs in my school has a motto of "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
I know it sounds gimmicky and childish and a lot of work but it is something that makes something of your life. It is a purpose.
Ok.. well I am all done with being humanitarian for the day...
I wish it were that simple, but it is hard when your government is run by banks, oil, and the military. You can vote who ever you want into office, they will simply become a pawn of these money juggernauts. Why do you think we don't have affordable healthcare for everyone, why do you think we Really went to Iraq, why do you think emission standards have stayed the same for so long? It is because of these thieves that have stolen our government from us. I have tried to do many of these things you speak of, in fact my profession deals with a lot of them, but I alone will never change it all. I am simply a person in a country of only a few others that know and do as I do. We are a very small minority, and frankly I am not going to waste my time on something that is so broken. I would rather move to a country that has a functional system of government and democracy; something the US has been lacking for almost a century. I wish it were different, but I am a realist, not a blind optimist.
meh, I don't really do any of those things I mentioned.
But I still do not believe the US is hopeless or broken. I'd say, misguided. Also certainly not worth saving.
