Huh, interestingly I didn't feel like there was such a strong connection to the Metroidvania genre, because to me it's more than just backtracking with new moves, rather it's returning and accessing completely new and expansive parts of old levels thanks to your new moves. My first reaction was that God of War's backtracking was a much more expanded version of what Ratchet & Clank was doing on the PS2, where you would return to old levels with new Gadgets to get loot. God of War simply having much more loot!
Remasters of these games would be terrible, you can't just apply 4K to PSone graphics and expect them to hold up. You'd need a full-on remake like the N. Sane Trilogy to make them look good for today's standards.
