Well, the first thing I would ask to be able to help better is "Are you planning to overclock?" and if yes, "by how much?".

The memory you picked (for $119.99) has CAS Latency 5.  You should get something like this (for $107.99) with CL 4:

If you are not planning to OC past 1350MHz FSB (3.039GHz), you can get DDR2-675 RAM with CL 4 for about $75:

It's your call on the video card, but for an extra $40-$50, I would get the 8800GTS.  20%+ better performance in current games, plus DX10 for future... might delay the next needed upgrade a bit.

If you aren't planning to use SLI, you can save a fair bit on the motherboard.

Well, a 8800GTS (dx10) will give you great dx9 game performance now too.

It will cost a bit more than a 7900GTX or X1950XTX, but you get better performance in DX9 games now and the ability to play the DX10 later... It may delay your next needed upgrade.

Edit - See the performance difference in current games:

Quad core will be worth it after July when the Q6600 goes down to $266.  Crysis is supposed to make use of multiple cores, and if you do any video encoding it will cut your processing time.

I would also suggest Vista (home premium) and 8800GTS over the 8600 if you can manage.

You can also go with memory like this:

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 675 (PC2 5400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145015

It's only $75 and will be just as good as the DDR800 unless you plan to overclock much past 3.37GHz.

Single processors run better on games than dual cores because dual cores are incapable of efficiently use more than one core at a time.

Mudig

Very, very, very NOT!

Core 2 Duo  (C2D) processors are what Intel made when they realized that P4 processors could only be clocked so fast.  They finally figured out that AMD was right... you need to make your processors more efficient and not just faster... and they did it so well that C2Ds are not only more efficient than their P4s, but also AMD's current A64 processors.

A 2GHz C2D will run circles around a 3GHz P4 - even on a single threaded application!

If you really are in the market for a quad-core, wait for June 22nd, where the 500+ q6600 will just become $266 after price cuts.jfelisario

Actually it's July 22, but the price gets cut in half!

But AMD will be releasing their new Quad Cores later this year too...

It just depends what is out when you are ready to buy.

I think AMD needs to learn how to NAME their CPU models, so hard to know what is what.  I am trying to make this new PC at least somewhat furture proof, probably cant make it 100%, that would cost many many grand.  I could just get that little Intel Quad Core I saw...but over $1000 for a cpu....yikes.Zoomer30

For a build "Later this year"... Intel is planning to drop the price of the Q6600 Quad Core processor to only $266 (USD) on July 22.

Also, you will want to avoid the socket 939 boards, because with RAM prices lately DDR is about double the cost of DDR2 and it will only get worse.

But it does maximize the 2% of your network performance that is contained within your PC!

Now, about the other 98%...
