Like Tomfool23 said. This card is totally overkill and a waste of money if you are doing 1080 gaming. You can max out 1080 for a lot lower price point. This is for the 1440, 4K and VR folks.
I don't see why you would be upset. It's just like on the PC side newer videocards and faster processors are always coming out. Doesn't mean you need to upgrade every single time an upgrade comes out. You can still play games and have good experiences just at different graphical levels.
At this point I call Rift a 2nd tier experience since it doesn't have spatial awareness or motion controls yet. Vive and PSVR are the only full VR options.
With Oculus it is still a half baked system. It will still need a camera (PSVR) or cubes (Vive) which will add to the cost and it doesn't have motion controls available like the Vive or PSVR which will add even more. So in reality Oculus if and when it has those options like Vive or PSVR will end up about the same price as the Vive $799.
Edit: PSVR does come with earbuds and I don't think the Oculus comes with a $100 set so you should remove that from your total.
