When I played the demo, I felt the same way. The character creator was a lot of fun, but the combat was so drab...but then I never was really a Soulsborne-type of fan, Salt and Sanctuary aside.
It's a shame, I wanted to like this. The Souls games are so ugly and grimdark, the anime aesthetic is the best thing about Code Vein.
This review read much more like a 7 or even an 8. I don't normally pay attention to scores at all, but the divide between the tone of the review and the actual score were so wide it caught my attention. It was weird. I saw the five but read on and thought, "This game actually sounds like a fun time to be had".
Played a bit of the demo and felt largely the same, though I didn't know about the problem with having to level up new daemons. But the gameplay felt repetitive and bland, just a bunch of button mashing, and I had no interest in the characters (though I might have liked it more if the girl with the scythe was the playable lead rather than yet another feather haired dude).
@Setho10: This is exactly why I loved TDK. It was the beast version of the Joker I'd seen. There have been many great renditions but that movie seemed to get him just right. He doesn't need a 'why'. He just is, and what he is, is an agent of chaos. The perfect foil to Batman as a mysterious symbol of order.
