Several things could be happening...
- Do you have all the current drivers installed for you sound/video cards?
- Does your PC meet the minimum requirements to run the game?
- Sometimes when you install programs, a file might get corrupted. To fix this, re-install and any bad files should be fixed or you can uninstall and then re-install
- Some programs that run in the background on your PC (anti-virus for example) can cause problems when installing programs or they can cause problems when you're running programs.
Those are the most common. One of the last things I can think of would be that you just got a bad copy of the game....it happens sometimes.

I always close them before playing a game ....well i'll re-install it.... but i have a hunch that there is a problem with my PSU coz Oblivion which I played so much in the past (and now reinstalled it to play Shivering Isles) crashes after like only 5-10 minutes into the game. on the other hand... Overlord runs fine.
