Megahaloman, in my opinion, the picture isnt anything you would put into a portfolio. However given the chance once again, you could retake a photo of that bird and make it much better. The photo is overexposed with everything kind of blurred together. The wood railing in the foreground is not aligned and the background is to distractive for you main focus. My advice would be to take a macro shot of the bird, much closer than where you were, and make sure that the photo wasn't so bright. Also a little touchup with photoshop would help liven the colors up. You have to remember that alot of the photos experts take and post on websites and magazines are not straight off the camera. They are saves as RAW files and the exposer and contrast and other features are tweaked to make the picture stand out.
Keep up the effort and dont be afraid to take lots of pictures of the same subjects. You'll find you have a much better selection that way.
IMO it was one of the best movies that I have seen in a long time. They really out-did themselves with this one.
