So here we are again, Pro Evo's release day...I look forward to this day every year. I have played PES since the days of ISS and have always been an avid fan, I ventured onto Fifa a bit when I was a kid but it never quite recaptured the satisfaction of working a goal on ISS. As Fifa 10 was released a few weeks ago all I've had are friends who play it telling me how amazing it was and how much better it was than PES would be, to which i stuck to my guns as I always do and told them to FU*K right off I'm sticking with my Pro Evo. So the moment has come....I'd felt excitement from playing the PES demo and could see the obvious improvements in the graphics, player movements and game engine, and to say it was a demo version i was fairly happy. So when it came to putting my copy of PES 2010 in my Xbox I was pretty much creaming myself. I put the game on Top Player as I consider myself a seasoned pro at PES. The players walked out onto the pitch, I was amazed, the graphics and player movement is a huge improvement, the real faces look so detailed, much more so than Fifa's plastecine players. The whistle blew and the computer kicked off, the computer passed it about, to my frustration with sublime accuracy and guile...I was thinking "I'm sure Sunderland aren't this good", they continued to do this for some time until I eventually won it back, at which point Bardsley won the ball back from Rooney with a perfect slide tackle from behind. I played the game out and it ended 0-0. I then opted for some lesser opposition so I could try and knock a few goals in, England V Qatar....it frustratingly finished 2-0 to me after two crappy, scrappy goals. Hmph I thought....maybe I should stick it on Regular. My first game on regular ended 9-0, with the computer performing like a Sunday pub team, too easy I thought. So i moved it up to Professional, and the computer went from being a Pub team to being frustratingly efficient once again. I wasn't enjoying either pounding teams on regular or chasing players forever on Professional. Hmmm.
At this point I decided to download the Fifa demo to see what everyone was harping on about, and I must say it is pretty dam good, I like a lot of aspects...but for me for all its fluidity and speed it just wasn't PES.
I thought I'd start a Master League as I always do, it always offers more replay value as you play season after season, reaping the rewards of player progression that sees average 17 year olds mature into world beaters. I'm glad to see it has had a long overdue overhaul, they've finally put real currency in and added a bit more content which makes it a little more in depth. Ah I thought things are finally starting to look up.
After 6-7 of Master League play on Professional I'm getting used to the game and started turning in some impressive displays, it certainly doesn't feel quite as frustrating.
I can never switch to Fifa, I love Pro Evo too much, I'm prepared to suffer its flaws in gameplay when compared to Fifa because i know I can learn to play this version, it just takes a little time.
I'm glad they've improved the in game music - if I ever have to listen to PES 09 music again I will cut my ears off (Echoes in my head, your voice it carries through...to the end) aaaargh fetch me that blade!
All in all I feel as though Konami have done an O.K job, its certainly enough to keep me playing for another year - I always feel as though they could have done better, that maybe they've spent too much time developing 1 part of the game, this year the player faces, last year the dreadful become a legend mode.
Still having the Champions League and adding the Europa League are plus points, and the editing facilities are still pretty good (I always spend a few hours editing the premiership kits and team names so at least they look a little like the real thing).
If you love Pro Evo like I do, then give it some time, learn the new engine, learn to keep the ball, get used to the shooting and when you do it will be beautiful.
