Pokemon X and Y make the series feel fresh and new with stunning new graphics and pokemon amie. A must play for 3DS.

User Rating: 8 | Pokemon Y 3DS

This game had a lot of hype and that hype was well deserved. For pokemon, this was a pretty groundbreaking step forward that we have all wanted for years. Finally being able to see all our collected pokemon in a 3D style is completely amazing. Despite a few areas that weren’t so great, pokemon really stands out as a truly great addition to anyone’s 3DS collection and is definitely a must buy.

Story: 3.5/10

So let’s face it, pokemon has never been the best in the story department, we’re all drawn to it for different reasons. X and Y however, seemed to be going back a step from its previous entry, black and white. In black and white, there was a team which actually made people debate about the ethics of keeping pokemon in a pokeball. This time around we get nothing like that, and to make it worse Team Flare’s objective feels even more flat than any villainous team to date. The only thing I got from playing was that they wanted to rule the world and that was about it.

Score: 8/10

A few good memorable songs, but is on par with the classic pokemon music we know and love.

Characters/ Character Development 4/10

While we don’t learn much about the major characters in the game and there isn’t really anything to compel us to care about any of the characters, doing things like battling your rival and meeting up with your in-game posse is still entertaining.

Gameplay: 9/10

With the same basic pokemon gameplay, pokemon X and Y feel great. There is so much to explore and collect that it will keep you interested and wanting to play more and more. I personally couldn’t wait to get to the next town and finish the game and I believe that you’ll be having the same feeling. Also, this game provides more interaction with pokemon such as being able to ride them in certain areas or interacting and feeding them in Pokemon Amie which really brings you into the game and makes you feel more for your pokemon.

Difficulty 2/10

This pokemon game seemed a lot easier than others before it. I’ve wanted pokemon to be more of a challenge that involved more grinding, but this pokemon game does not deliver. The new version of the exp share pretty much breaks the game (in the fact that it makes it so easy). By the time you’re at the elite four, you’re already ten levels ahead of their strongest pokemon.

Controls 5/10

There are only two issues I have with the game that need to be addressed. One is the roller skates. As nice as it is to move faster without holding down the B button, the roller skates can be a little erratic when you are trying to stop at a specific space, either to talk to someone or to try to interact with something. You can use the control pad to normally walk, but it would still be nice to have the option to unequip the skates. The second is the lack of camera control in Luminose City. The camera control makes it difficult to view the things you would like to a truly get a good view of the magnificent city.

Graphics 9/10

This is probably the biggest highlight of the game. Seeing your pokemon in stunning three dimensional figures is absolutely great. No longer do we have what was once two pictures of pokemon just moving up and down. We now get to see a pokemon act out its attacks and see how they react from getting hit.

Fun: 9.5/10

Pokemon has always given a great sense of an adventure and this game has only made it better. With new pokemon to collect, new towns to explore (including one huge town) and new ways to play (such as pokemon Amie and mega evolutions) this pokemon game makes things feel fresh and exciting while keeping the standards from the previous games that we loved so much.
