Simple yet difficult strategy that is great stress relief also!!

User Rating: 9 | PixelJunk Monsters PS3
The First thing I noticed about Pixel Junk Monsters was how cutesy and relaxed it was. But I was wrong, this game is a full fledged trial and error strategy game that is rewarding and fun to play, and it is a great stress buster after a long day at work.

The graphics are simple and cartoony, but that just adds to the charm of the game, once you start playing it is hard to put down, you just feel compelled to blow up those monsters and laugh at the little screams.

You play as a little tribesman trying to keep monsters from killing the rest of the tribe and to do it you have to position a good variety of towers around the map, it sounds simple to start with, but a few waves in the numbers of monsters increases, and you get a sense of panic whenever they come closer to the home base and you realised that you forgot to put a crossbow next to the base. This game relies heavily on trial and error, if you are up against flying monsters and forgot to put in a AA gun and all you have is crossbows and cannons you can expect to lose some of your tribe, it might not be so bad in the earlier levels, but once you get to harder levels you need to keep as many of your tribe as possible.

The sounds in this game are not too bad, the relaxed music is repetitive but it is nice when you are not used to it. The sounds of the game itself are simple but good, you hear cannons firing and monsters yelling or screaming when killed, each monster type has a different scream.

The levels pretty much follow the same patterns as each other, for the first easy levels there are 10 waves plus the boss, and after that it is 20 waves, the latter taking about 15 to 20 minutes depending on how you set up your towers.

There is a good range of towers to play with, all need to be unlocked first, and towers range from long range crossbow towers, to powerful lasers and flamethrowers. The flamethrower tower is amusing when fully upgraded, you see a long line of enemies coming your way, and one single flamethrower tower can almost deal with all of them at once.
To upgrade the towers you need gems, and the gems are dropped by the monsters you kill, you can also use these gems to research new towers.

I would give this game 9/10, the difficulty in later levels may put some people off, but it is addictive and good fun, especially with co op mode.
