User Rating: 6.7 | Nightshade PS2
Nightshade is a promising game. Too bad it's not much more than that. I usually like games with a lot of challenge. But Nightshade is, even in my opinion, not challenging, just plain HARD. I just hate it when a game gets its high difficulty level from idiotic game design. For example, one of the final stages in Nightshade takes more than one hour to complete (the rest of the stages takes about an average of 20 minutes to finish), because of the hellish platform sequence. It is rare that one level can lower the score of entire game, but in Nightshade, it does. The graphics are nothing special. All enemies, excluding bosses, are ugly and look the same. The levels are blank and grey. The only thing preventing the graphics score from dropping into 1 is the beautiful human characters. The main character, Hibana, looks amazing, as all of the great and inspiring bosses do. Everything runs smoothly 60 fps, without interruption, but that might be because of the blank and boring levels. The downpoint of this game is definitely the music, which is just plain horrible techno-crap. The voice acting is also pretty low grade. Well, you can always turn the sound off... It does not take long to finish Nightshade, but it takes long to obtain all of the hidden stuff, such as new characters, costumes, game-modes etc. But it's hard to imagine anyone doing this, because that would require completion of the Hard-difficulty level, which is, again, frustratingly hard. So, if you're looking for a challenge, go and rent Nightshade. Yes, RENT. Except if you want to cry just because you bought a game too hard to finish...
