Skyrim Dawnguard DLC may never come to PS3

Bethesda addresses absence of add-on for Sony console, says "issues" are potentially unsolvable.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim's Dawnguard digital expansion may never come to the PlayStation 3. Writing on the official Bethesda forums, a company representative explained that it has attempted to solve unspecified issues, but to no avail.
"Skyrim is a massive and dynamic game that requires a lot of resources, and things get much more complex when you're talking about sizable content like Dawnguard," the Bethesda representative explained. "We have tried a number of things, but none of them solve the issue enough to make Dawnguard good for everyone. Dawnguard is obviously not the only DLC we’ve been working on either, so the issues of adding content get even more complicated. This is not a problem we’re positive we can solve, but we are working together with Sony to try to bring you this content" (emphasis added).
Dawnguard is the first expansion for Skyrim. It launched in June for the Xbox 360 and arrived on PC earlier this month. Earlier this week, Bethesda said it was "disappointed" that the content had not yet arrived for the PS3.

1 Like anyone talking about ps3's "hardware limitations" should piss off... they can make the standard game run fine, how much harder will dlc be on the console?

To be frank, Dawnguard could easily be transported to the PS3 system; we simply refuse to do it. Xbox is the superior system. It's hard not to show contempt and disdain for the type of individual who would choose an inferior system, such as a PS3, or a PC for that matter. PC users think they can mod Skyrim better than the developers. Why should they get the same releases as those who are incredible, talented, and attractive enough to have purchased an Xbox? It's preposterous." When asked the reasons for revealing this information, Pete said: "I want to put an end to the rumors and speculation. We despise any platform that isn't Xbox. In the future, our goal is to make releases that are exclusive only for that platform. Economic barriers are the only thing holding us back from this exclusivity, save for what we can afford to keep away from the abominable PS3 and its wretched users."
Uh Oh Bethesda....if you don't fix that issue you might have to give out Horse Armor Free DLC for Skyrim again....eerrrrr...wait....better not
2 Like how incompetent can you be? hi, we're bethesda and we can't figure out how to add more content to this game that we just wrote from scratch. seriously? refund everyone's money and close your studio. if I was this craptastic at my job I wouldn't have a job.
I have all the platforms (probably like most people). When skyrim came out I looked at the screen shots and to me the ps3 one looked a bit better than the xbox and I never personally liked playing these types of games on the pc (better in the living room on big hd tv with a no-hassle controller). I thought oblivion had been better on the ps3, even though I had on the xbox version I couldn't go wrong. Now I really don't want to play through it all again and looking today and seeing there still is no dlc for it this situation more than a bit dissapointing, it just goes on and on. They should of made the console version for the ps3 in the first place and ported it the other way. Maybe that way both versions would of worked, would that be a bit too much wishfull thinking though?
1 Like Sorry to read about this PS3 gamers, I know many of you will be dissapointed. But, on the up side it might convince many of you to buy a real computer :) since they now cost the same as a PS3 and you can do so much more with them :)
@BiiteMe I dont like pc gaming cause I enjoy using a video game controler not a mouse and key pad.
But you can use ALL the console controlers on a PC on almost any game. There is NOTHING you can do on a console that a PC can't do better.... just saying :)
Please don't get me wrong, you can't just pull your console controler out of your console and plug it into your PC, what I meant is, you can purchase ALL the standard console controlers (xbox/ps3 etc) that have the connection for the PC. So you can have the same controls that you know and love but with a USB, Wireless or Bluetooth connection.

Disappointing, got the PS3 version on release days expecting it was going to be a good one (hey I guess Oblivion was ok) but now i regret, I should have bought the Steam version. I understand there could be some "technical" issues but come on! Its the freaking PS3 not a Wii... Since the very beginning it has been a very buggy version. Sony and Bethesda says they are working on it, cool but at least they must compensate the players with something... A free DLC or "cheaper" one (if ever released) would be something...
This makes me really sad hearing about this. Its so disappointing that us Ps3 users could miss out on this dlc. I can only hope some ps3 exclusive dlc comes out in a few weeks or months to make up for the long wait. I also hope we can get hearthfire since its just building cool homes.
1 Like The PS3 has some serious hardware limitations, you guys realise that it has 256MB of RAM? To put it into perspective, you need at least 2GB to run it on PC at stable framerates. So before you start ranting about some corporate conspiracy involving Microsoft; shut up, and learn something about gaming hardware. Then you might realise why Bethesda is having such trouble.
@Infiniteawesome This is true, but when the console has been out for 5 years I feel you should have found a way around this by now. Every other developer has. It probably takes 2 gig of ram to run on a PC but it probably looks much better on a PC on low settings then both the PS3 and 360. I'm just guessing and tell me if I'm wrong but the game was probably more heavily developed for the PC rather then its console counter parts.
@jayd02 First of all, 5 years equates to about 5 generations of PC hardware, so obviously the performance gap will be massive. And actually, low/medium settings on a PC looks about the same as Xbox 360/PS3 settings (I own PC and 360). The game was primarily developed for each individual console at the same time, playing to each ones strengths. The problem comes with the PS3 being so different to PC architecture, a lot of other developers just really tone down the graphics on their games for consoles, meaning that they'll run on each just as well. I doubt you'd want Bethesda doing the same on Skyrim? Imagine the public outcry if it turned out that Skyrim looked shit on consoles. As it is at the moment, I'd say it looks pretty flawless for today's standards. I just so happens the the PS3 has hit a wall in the road, and can't be taken any further.
2 Like @Infiniteawesome @jayd02 Its not the ps3 fault its bethesda. THEY chose to develop it on the 360 and port it to the ps3, ps3 gamers shouldnt suffer for a marketing decision. Fact is, it could be called a conspiracy because of this, microsoft pays bethesda money for 1 month exclusivity, bethesda then makes the game essentially for the 360...and now surprise we cant bring the DLC to ps3...seems suspicious to me, bethesda knew the limitations of the ps3, knew they were doing DLC, and knew the memory for the DLC would probably need to be large. So this is either all terrible coincidence or its planned, either way bethesda looks like a shitty company, and rightfully so.
@Infiniteawesome You have a point but still bethesda should be able to figure out something since they got it to ruin on xbox 360.
@romans1001 The Xbox 360 actually shares a lot of hardware similarities with a PC in regards to architecture. Also, it has 512MB of shared system memory. Because the PS3 is so different, it isn't quite as easy as just 'figuring something out', it may well be that it just can't be done.
if you take the hardware out of the ps3 and put it in a desktop case and then got a computer harddrive and installed windows 7, then you have a serious gaming computer right there and have the ability to play computer games. it's not the hardware that's the problem, it's the software. in other words, it's a programming problem that has to deal with the software of the ps3.
2 Like I've already explained this and it's obvious to anybody that Bethesda knows how to program on the PS3, they just choose to handicap their games for M$.
I just smile wider and wider every time I see news regarding this POS. I've never saved a smarter $60 by avoiding a game.
@ProjektInsanity Even though Skyrim has a lot of bugs, its still a very good RPG title and brings a rich gaming experience. It's far from being a POS. I am on my 2nd play through and am still having fun. Sorry to hear you feel that way though.

I don't know abour anyone else, but the 360 version has worked flawlessly for me at least. Not a single crash or anything weird and I have had the game since day one. And I just picked up both DLCs. Maybe PS4 will get the support it needs when the time for a new console comes, hopefully.
1 Like @Baneface Can't agree more. The 360 version is the BEST console version because Bethesda themselves admitted that the game engine was optimized for the 360. Obviously the PC version is a lot richer in terms of more graphical options and modding. However, also being a PS3 owner, I feel Bethesda should do something to make up for the lost ground with PS3 consumers. So hopefully PS3 owners of Skyrim can wake up to some good news in the days ahead.

@Filthy80 The more I think of it, it makes me sad. I think PS3 owners of Skyrim deserve the DLCs. I really hope Bethesda have some kind of good news in the near future. After all, no matter what platform we play on, every Skyrim fan paid the same amount of money and deserve an equal level of enjoyment.

1 Like yeah there is something behind the scenes. The over priced internet ready blu ray player simply can't handle RAM intensive games like this. FACT. The ancient split RAM architecture of the over priced internet ready blu ray player is a tremendous INFERIORITY that has hamstrung this machine from the get go. Face it. It's an over hyped blu ray player trying to come off as a gaming machine and this late in the game it's really beginning to show.

@buying1999 Haha, oh you silly 360 fanboys and your crazy ideas that the 360 is superior or something. The 360 is a waste. It's diversity among exclusive titles consists of... Shooters and Fable. And then XBL which you have to pay for, oh but I'm sure the 50 dollars a year is totally worth the gimmicks such as "earlier DLC" (that you still have to pay for on top of XBL) and cross party chat.
A few multi plat games that run like crap on the PS3 do not mean it's a crippled system. In fact games like Uncharted 2 and 3, Last of Us, Killzone 2 and 3 etc. are far better than any game you would ever see on 360. Primarily because the PS3 has a far more powerful processor than the 360.
As for Skyrim, I'm glad I play on PC.

4 Like @buying1999 Seems like an educated and well informed thesis. I have to do more research on this issue. I beg to differ on the overall assumption that the Xbox 360 is the better of the two. After owning both I quickly realized that the 360 had reached the end of its shelf life. For various reasons they both have an appeal; it just depends on the individual.

1 Like @Dragdar Ps3 is not the only console i have not herad of any 360 problems with the game.so bethesda are not saying that. they are unfortunely having problems with the ps 3 version because the machine does not have enough ram.
5 Like As a PS3 owner, I'm neither surprised nor bothered. IMO Bethesda games aren't worth the investment without the modding community, something consoles have limited (if any) access to. Without that, the games are only 'good' when they could be great, and there are better games to spend $60 on. Yeah, they're open-world, but the storylines are only mildly interesting and generally don't last long on their own, it's the rest of the world that's supposed to beef up the game...except the rest of the world is pretty redundant, and very few things you do in it have the same impact as the main storyline. It really falls on the fans of Bethesda's games to make them great.
Bottom line, if you want to play a Bethesda game, get a PC. Otherwise, play something else.
1 Like @nathangray Tell that to millions of people who decided purchase the game for the consoles and still enjoy the "mildly interesting" stories or the "pretty redundant" rest of the game. The numbers speak for themselves. IMO, and in the opinion of millions, the Elder Scrolls is one of the best fantasy stories out there, and Skyrim is one of the most addictive games of our time.
@Rathgaret I don't have to tell that to anyone, as you've missed the point entirely. Regardless of whether you found the main story had more depth than I did, in the end the PC owners are getting more for their buck. They're paying the same amount as console owners for infinite content. That's just not a wise investment no matter how much you like the game.

@nathangray what they finally fix it I can leave comments now crap better fix some of them and watch what I say because it is very easy to get modded here if you say anything bad about the 360 but not if you say bad stuff about the ps3 well that was the way it used to be
1 Like First of all, I feel sad for PS3 owners. I hope you get some kind of justice at the end of it all. I am not a fan boy of any console. I own both the Xbox 360 and PS3. I like both consoles; they both are special in their own ways. However, I did notice something strange with the PS3 on several occasions with regards to multi platform titles. For eg: I have Assassin's Creed 2 for the Xbox and PS3. The game runs decently on the Xbox compared to the PS3. The PS3 version lags and stutters quite a few times. I thought it was a one off and bought Mass Effect 3 for PS3. Once again, it was laggy and had a lot of slow downs. The Xbox version was a lot smoother. So this definitely must be an issue with the PS3. Sadly, there is nothing Sony can do at this point because the console has been out for 6 years. Bethesda should have done better IMO. I hope they keep trying and help out the PS3 users. Gaming should be on a level playing field.

@Rathgaret @starjay009 : Yeah I guess. I love the PS3 just as much as the 360. They are like my 2 eyes !! I see positives for both of them. PS3 has the best 'exclusives' IMO and the 360 is the best when it comes to multi-platform titles. So there are good things on both sides.

It's the terrible slow seek times of the blu ray drive, the ancient split ram architecture, and the pitiful anemic RSX gpu wannabe. Fix those things and you've got a great machine.
