PS3 in 'prime time' says Sony

Worldwide Studios boss says it's a "great time" to pick up aging home console; no plans for a price cut this year.
With the PlayStation 3 nearing its sixth birthday and rumors of a next-generation successor swirling, some might think the PS3 is past its prime. But according to comments from Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida to Eurogamer, the PS3 is now seeing its best days.
"PS3 is I think in prime time," Yoshida said. He claimed it's a "great time" for consumers to consider picking up a PS3 because of the games on the horizon, including exclusives like Naughty Dog's postapocalyptic action game The Last of Us and David Cage's narrative-focused Beyond: Two Souls.
Quizzed about the recent PS3 super slim rumor, Yoshida only said, "That's a rumor." Additionally, the executive ruled out a possible PS3 price cut in the coming year, saying Sony has no plans to lower the entry point from $250.
"We are very happy with where we are in terms of PS3: the services, games, and the pricing included," Yoshida said. "So, there's no plan for any change we can talk about."

I love my PS3 and will buy a PS4. Can't say the same for 360. 360 has no Exclusives and MS refuses to create new IP's. Also after 3 RROD's on 3 separate 360's I had enough. I will never buy anything from MS ever again.
@BryanParksSuper Not to mention the $60 a year you have to pay to play online, PLUS any online passes you have to purchase if you buy a used game that requires one. If you buy 4 used games and at $10 a pop for passes, that's $100 in a year just to play games online. Or just $40 for PS3....or free for PC unless a subscription fee is required.

Just say that you'll continue to support the PS3 until PS4 is released. You wouldn't need to patronize your fanboys if you respected their intelligence.
2 Like Game companies don't choose to retire consoles in their prime, only consumers do that. If games on any system stop being profitable for both first party and third party developers, the system loses support, retailers stop stocking it and the system dies. Investing in the R and D for new game systems set back Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, billions of dollars. And they don't get that money back and start making profits for many years!!!! In a perfect world, game companies would prefer not to keep introducing new game systems. But competition and consumer's desire for better graphics forces them to make new systems every 5 to 10 years.

The PS3 has a lot of great 1st-party and 3rd-party offerings. So it's a real good time to get on-board with the PS3 for those that haven't got one.

In my opinion, Sony made an unnecessary move to cut the price of the Playstation 3 from $299.99 to $249.99, because $299.99 was enough of a cost for the Playstation 3.
All I can say is that the PS3 is coming out with between 11-13 exclusives next year - albeit that sounds more like a final hurrah rather than prime time as many projects beyond 2013 are heavily rumored for next-gen (i.e. Killzone 4, Fox-engine based Metal Gear Solid, etc).
1 Like PS3 came out November 2006. To me the prime time for a console is around mid-way (so 2009-2010 for PS3):1) By that point a ton of great games have come out and you can pick up amazing games for cheap;
2) The console will had had several rounds of price cuts, especially PS3 did;
3) Any initial technical bugs have been worked out (especially true for 360);
4) There are still 3-4 years left of solid gaming before you are thinking about a new console.
By that account PS3 is way past its prime and is towards the end of its life. 90% of all the best games have already come out for PS3. There isn't much left. While it's still great value for $250, at that point, I'd rather put that $250 towards PS4/Xbox720 or even Wii U. Xbox720/PS4 are likely barely more than 1.5 years ago. Buying a 6-year-old console for $250 today seems like a waste since I am sure Sony will sell HD versions of PS3 titles on PSN network when PS4 launches with no backwards compatibility and you'll still be able to play them on PS4.
1 Like Just bought a PS3 last weekend and gotta say it's been GREAT!!! I wanted it to play its exclusives: MGS 4, Uncharted, God of war 3, resistance 3, infamous, and others comming next months. I enjoyed my 360 and PC games for years. Thought was time for something refreshing and found it. Don't know if the PS3 is or not in prime time and don´t care, it's a great console, period.

1 Like ok this is good. companies spend way too much time putting out new hardware for the games when the existing hardware is more than capable -the problem is the GAME. The ps3 has great processing power it just needs games able to use it that are polished well -not half baked ones. Overall im happy with my ps3 (its got a few flaws but nothings perfect) and that it melted down recently and was replaced when i sent it in to the shop. But i think its got a lot of life left in it look at the ps2 and how long it lasted -i don't think new hardware is as important was people seem to think

1 Like @kohle36 @Max42 When PS3 came out, it was a lot more powerful than PS2. I was there during that launch and I followed it closely. There were also 2 groups: (1) those who said PS2 is enough and has enough life left in it (2) those who thought PS3 would introduce new IPs, new games and better graphics, physics and AI. PS3/360/Wii is THE longest console generation in the last 15 years. In the past consoles lasted 5-6 years tops before being replaced and gamers loved and embraced the change. Sorry but PS3 is obsolete. The graphics in it is 15-20x slower than modern graphics card. It's time for a PS4/720. When PS4 actually launches, you won't be saying OH I wish PS3 lasted 5 more years, just like when PS3 launched you didn't play PS2 until 2010 did you?
@BestJinjo No need to apologize, the ps3 IS obsolete. My point was that I'd rather see innovation in terms of gameplay in the current gen than graphically enchanced iterations of the same games on a different console. Of course I'm looking forward to the next set of hardware (though more for its networking capabilities than graphical fidelity), but that doesn't mean I'm not going to play the games I love on ps3 for a while yet (ftr, I actually still dust off my ps2 periodically).
Good games are good games. The ps3 is outdated hardware at this point for sure, but looking at its library, it's hard to deny that from a software standpoint, yeah it is in its prime.

Consoles struggle to provide consistant acceptible frame rates despite the poor graphical quality and low resolution. I know you guys love your consoles and thats perfectly fine! but consoles in the past never lasted this long. each new revision from each company brought something new to the table. We need that next revision! you'd love it and the pc gamer community would also love it.

1 Like @TheJamin The young / new generation of console gamers are cry babies. It's almost a 180* difference from when my generation was young. I remember when I was a kid and upgraded from NES to Sega Genesis, I didn't complain about progress and loved it. Then I ditched the Genesis for N64 at 13 and again didn't complain that "Oh no, I hope Genesis lasts another 5 years". This is the ONLY generation where despite Xbox360 and PS3 approaching 6-7 years mark that people don't want progress. Next year smartphones will be more powerful than a PS3. It's time for new consoles, which is why they are all launching within the next 1-2 year span, regardless if people think PS3 is good enough for 10 more years.
The only people who are against progress are those who can't afford next generation consoles easily. Well, the earlier the next generation consoles launch, the more time it saves for these people to save $ and also it gives those next generation consoles time to drop in prices.
Not sure what the young generation's deal is but the new console generation is WAY overdue, and probably would have been released earlier if it wasn't for the financial crisis that dragged on for 5 years.

I mean, PC people could move on with new hardware every two weeks, pushing boundaries of technological advancement and getting all the games developers were willing to drop the bucks on producing. And consoles could get affordable games, both in price and in development. Not talking about 10 bucks mobile like games, but simpler games, maybe something more like what the PS1 had. Where graphics are less of an issue and what people want is to buy a game and have fun, not count the how many frames per second they are doing on their machines. PC would get the fancy graphics people for whatever reason so desperately need and desire and consoles could get the creativity back.
I know this sounds patronizing but I am a PC gamer and a console gamer. I would love to stop paying 60 bucks for games that are clearly worth less than that, and would love to see whatever industry behemoth is willing to do with the "unlimited" power of an adequate gaming machine. Consoles should be reserved for simpler experiences... that don't require patching, instal times... internet connection and dlc. This generation has successfully proven that consoles are to become irrelevant sometime in the near future (20 years maybe? 2 generations from now? Maybe less).
2 Like Label me as fanboy but how can you define a "prime time" of a system when, for gamers like me, they never past their prime? I mean, PS3 is as much in its prime now as it was 3, 5 years ago. And what to say about PS2, prime as ever? That's so relative... It's the kind of question that ONLY interests people who look for profits...

@jamesl1992 it's not the hardware that is to blame in cases like that (assuming the 360 ver isn't crap too). When a game is in development, they usually make the game with a platform in mind, it gets debugged & optimized around that hardware, then after it is is finished, it gets ported to the other platforms. Depending on how much effort they put in to the ports determines how well it will run on alternate platforms. It has absolutely nothing to do with the hardware and everything to do with laziness & corner cutting.

@jamesl1992 I'm sorry but judging a system because one or another bad game doesn't make it imperfect. Do your homework better next time, the PS3 has lots of good titles to make up for a robot-movie based game, btw a boring movie, which explains the bad game.

Exclusives are a shame because it means some gamers miss out on some of the best moments in a generation, but considering the aging PS3 really isn't even that expensive anymore there actually isn't an excuse.
It's worth picking one up for the back catalogue of games, never mind the ones set for next year.
Microsoft is great if you like Gears and Halo, but Sony just offers much much MUCH more. You'd have to be disillusioned to not admit that one.
Oh but there are disillusioned people out there. However, let's not dwell on that though or we'll have another raging consolewar thread going.
The other day I was actually thinking goddammit do I actually have to go buy an Xbox to get Armored Core For Answer working properly becasue the PS3 version has horrible, horrible FPS drops at certain points at some missions. And Baynetta is another reason too. So yeah... maybe, maybe.
I just guess I read a little too far into the article. I will never let my massive fanboy pop out again.
PS3 could be on its prime time at the moment. But I have a wish anyway. I'd like to see more players on multiplayer games. For instance 12vs12 is not enough for most of BF3 maps. I dont think the console can handle 32vs32 but I believe it could handle 16vs16 for some maps without frame rate loss. It's about the permissions (bandwidth usage etc.) that Sony gives the producers. I believe it can be changed.

Im glad i bought one after my 4th xbox 360 went pop !!! never looked back, NOW BRING ON THE PS4 AND WOO ME SOME MORE SONY
