New PS3 model pics surface

Sony filing with Brazilian telecommunications agency reveals new ridged form factor for third model of PlayStation 3; registers hardware in 16GB, 250GB, and 500GB.

by

The evidence is mounting that Sony will soon introduce the second major revision to the PlayStation 3 hardware. As reported by Tecnoblog, a Sony filing with Brazilian telecommunications regulator Anatel includes details and pictures of a new PS3.

The PS3 and Ruffles now have yet another thing in common.

The most prominent changes to the hardware are the system's ridged and uneven top panel and apparent lack of a visible disc-loading slot. That suggests the system will have a disc tray with a flip-top lid (like the original PlayStation hardware or the PlayStation 2 Slim) or a sliding panel. As for the size of the system, it appears modestly smaller than the current iteration of the PS3. The Anatel filing also notes that Sony sought approval for versions of the hardware with three different-size hard drives: 16GB, 250GB, and 500GB.

The new model of the PS3 has been outed before, most concretely through a Sony Federal Communications Commission filing for a CECH-4000 series of the hardware. Additionally, unconfirmed reports had Sony set to announce the new PS3 model at Gamescom 2012 next month. The German industry event also played host to Sony's unveiling of the PS3 Slim in 2009.

So basically it's the result of a PS3 Slim mating with a PS2?

if its over 200 then there is no point in buying it

Maybe it's the pic, but it still looks too huge to even be a first iteration "Slim." Remember the PS2 Slim? That thing was as small as a PS2 game box. *nostalgia*

You know what that means: PS4 will have at least 250 and 500GB hard drives (or more). :)-

Of course they release this a couple of months after I buy one; why wouldn't they.......?

Makes sense, Sony is doing what it always does at the end of a hardware cycle. A year out or so from new tech, release a cheaper, smaller version of the existing console. Sure, the Wii U will be the spotlight this Christmas, but this is Sony's last sprint for a few more sales from their existing tech.

in this photo it seems ugly. but history proves that the most important factor is the price, which i think it should not be more than 150 box. wiiu is a big disaster for ps3.

If it is $149.99 I will finally buy one just for the kids tv room for blu-rays, netflix and the occasional game or two.

well i already have a 40gb old model (with a 350gb HDD) and a 160gb slim (with a 500gb HDD) so i won't get another one but this is good news for people who don't have one or want to replace their old one

PS. if this version has backwards compatibility with PS2 game then i will get it

Look like the ridges on the new unit's face plate allow a sliding mechanism to reveal the disc inside, plus it allows best surface-area for seasoning just in case you want to deep fry your console (Xbox-fanboy/girl:  C'mon you know you wanna.)

Shame. It was Sony's relaxed attitude towards older models that attracted me away from the Xbox where, immediately, no new games were made for the machine the day the 360 was released.

I got the PHAT 60gb model because it also could play PS2 titles (and had SACD playback compatibility). Sadly my PHAT only lasted three years after which it continually broke down.  My new Slim has lost the PS2 and SACD abilities much to my regret, so I may sell these disks.

One thing is for certain, if I buy a PS4 at all (which seems unlikely in these rumours are true) my experience with the my First Gen (PHAT 60gb) PS3 means I won't be getting the first Gen PS4.  I think I will probably wait for one of the 3rd of 4th gen. models when they arrive.

There's no hurry.  I can't imagine what fantastic leaps over the PS3 the PS4 is likely to have in any case. The PS3 does it all for me already**.  I reckon new games will still be made for the PS3 post PS4 for a while, just like new PS2 games have been coming out every now and then post PS3.

** a built in Retina display (3D of course) would be a good start - so I don't need hog out 43" plasma display.

well if I didn't already have a PS3 original that never gets played or ever breaks down.... I'd probably just get right into the "next Generation" with a PC.... Like I am now... waiting for someone to challenge a "next generation" capable PC.

Well, maybe if it has backward compatibility, is cheaper and alot smaller, maybe I can forgive it's ugliness. After all, who says I can't hide it!

@grbolivar

Yes.  However for some of us it's nice to be reminded that the PS3 Super Slim was released such a short time ago.  That at least means they are less likely to abandon new PS3 software projects in favour of the PS4.  This was a worry to me when I heard certain software houses had announced they were dropping the PS3 the moment the PS4 was announced. I went through this when my old Xbox was replaced by the 360. Overnight - bricked by zero software.

Unlikely to happen with the PS3 if they have only just started selling a new model.

Anything under 1TB is old in my eyes nowerdays! I will be surprised if the next gen has any less then TB's.... Seeing as the next gen really wont be here for 1-2years MINIMUM... regardless of what crack pot theroy people may or may not choose to belive...

@Razer361 Don't worry, this certainly wont be as big a jump as the slim was, and could possibly be worse.

@M_T_Mabowels What happened to your PHAT PS3? From what I heard they were much more reliable than first 3 generation of Xbox 360s!Also, if you intend to wait until 3rd-4th revision of PS4, that's going to be like in the year 2018-2019. hahaa! Seriously? Just buy a PS4 with one of those 4-year Square Trade Electronic warranties. If PS4 is $500-600, that's about $120 for that warranty.

DemannameD
DemannameD

@Razer361 out of curiosity why is everyone asking if after skipping backwards compatibility for the last 5 years... now with this chopped down version of the "slim" PS3; people want to know if it can do what the original could do? Why would they make newer PS3s backwards compatible if the second generation wasn't? More over when a PS2 cost less than $50 why are your retarded asses concerned if the PS3 can play PS2 games... a year before the PS4 comes out.... ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

M_T_Mabowels
M_T_Mabowels

@BestJinjo I still have it but its dead awaiting me having enough dough to get it fixed again.  Xbox 360 - yes that FAT was compared with those apparently.  Must have been a nightmare owning a 360.  My PS3 started going wrong at around the 3 year old mark.  It was fine up until then.

When I get it fixed I will have to keep its usage down and mainly use the Slim for long gaming sessions; keeep the FAT for SACD, PS2 titles and watching stuff stored on my SDHC cards.  Got to get some use out of the 650 GB upgraded HDD you see.

Razer361
Razer361

@DemannameD @Razer361 I'm not expecting them to add backward compatibility, I just think it should. How nice would it be to be able to play ps2 games on ps3? It seems like a no-brainer.
