No Call of Duty: XP in 2012
E3 2012: Activision says it has no plans to hold Call of Duty-centric convention again this year, expo in 2013 or later possible.
LOS ANGELES--Activision will not hold a Call of Duty: XP convention in 2012, the publisher told Polygon last night. The inaugural all-things-Call of Duty gathering was held in Los Angeles last September and was an avenue through which Activision and developers Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games promoted Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Activision did not provide a reason for not continuing Call of Duty: XP past its first year, but a statement provided to Polygon left room open for an expo in 2013 or beyond.
"While it's possible we may host another XP in the future, we don't have plans to hold the event this year," reads a line from the statement.
The 2011 Call of Duty: XP also hosted a $1 million gaming tournament, a full-scale replica of Modern Warfare 2's Burger Town, a zip-line, paintball matches, and live music performances from Irish-American punk rock band Dropkick Murphys and Grammy award-winning rapper Kanye West.
Tickets for the show ran $150 each, with all of the money from sales going to the Call of Duty Endowment, a nonprofit group founded by Activision in 2009 to help soldiers transition to civilian life with job replacement and training programs.
Call of Duty: XP is not the only Activision-sponsored convention that will skip a 2012 showing. In January, the publisher announced that it would not hold a BlizzCon in 2012, so it could focus on Diablo III, Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm, and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria.
