No BlizzCon in 2012

Event organizers say annual gaming gathering skipping this year due to "jam-packed" schedule; 2012 Battle.net World Championship to be held in Asia.

Blizzard's BlizzCon gaming gala--a celebration of all things Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo--has been held every year since 2007, but this year, gamers won't have one to look forward to.

Nope. Not this year.

Today, Blizzard announced that due to the company's "jam-packed" scheduled, it has decided to hold the next BlizzCon in 2013. Blizzard said it is presently "heavily focused" on releasing Diablo III, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, and StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm "as soon as possible."

In addition, Blizzard today announced the 2012 Battle.net World Championship, an e-sports tournament to feature the "best pro-gaming competition in the world." The event will take place at the end of 2012 in Asia, and it will host the 2012 StarCraft II and World of Warcraft Arena World Championship tournaments.

More information concerning the 2012 Battle.net World Championship and BlizzCon 2013--like locations and dates--will be shared in the coming months, Blizzard said.

The writings on the wall. The theme of the new xpac. Dropping Blizzcon, holding the tourney in Asia. Heroic Deathwing world firsts were scored by a Korean guild. I'd be willing to wager that most of the subs are Asian at this point. Nothing wrong with that, but that is where the market is for Warcraft, which will affect the direction the game takes.

As long as I can desecrate and pilfer Wirt's rotten corpse again, all this waiting will be worth it!

Blizzcon were meant to show u guys new games, such as the announcement of MoP this year, the the 5th class for d3 last year, this year they cant really show u anything other than what u already know. Their schedule isnt jam pack, but the player schedule is jam pack, with d3, sc 2 HoS, and MoP coming out, what u guys wnat to see? another exp detail with just art works and plain talk no game play. Its a wise choice to skip this year and show u guys even more next year

I doubt that 11M figure since it was 10M several years ago and many people left when they changed the character/pet stats.

I highly doubt they are having financial problems... after two multi-million unit selling games and their constant income from 11 million people playing WOW, come on bro, they're rollin in it.

I think that Blizzard is running into financial problems because of all the changes they have in WOW, and people have left in droves. WOW must really be spending on advertising since people like gamespot and IGN keep pushing it. I left several years ago when they completely changed the way characters/pets play. Sure didnt do anything for my 70 and 80's

Blizzard always announces release dates in their events. Does skipping this Blizcon then mean the obvious?

@aamir69 Good saying but technically the fruit hasn't dropped yet. Only played the first diablo on playstation and for only a typical rental session so what I know about what would b good or bad.

There is a saying " When you wait for the fruit to get ripped, the fruit becomes more tastier" But in Diablo's case, the fruit has become rotten already. I cancelled my pre-order when i heard about the auction & constant internet connection. Hope the game release will change my mind

I like Blizzard, but they make some really unorthodox decisions.

LMAO..more like they have nothing to show..hence they're shoveling a starcrap 2 tournament..FYI diablo fiends...one of the main producers who been with blizzard working on diablo 3 quit blizzard last week. Steve Parker said -"I’m no longer working at Blizzard or on D3," said Steve. "I've had a great 5 years there and those guys are going to kill it with Diablo." Enjoy your day :/

Guess Blizz didnt want to disappoint anyone in person by revealing nothing is going to release this year :P might as well disappoint over the safety of the internet.

@Gelugon_baat Why would making an Diablo MMO become a problem? By stealing their own customers? If anything, a Diablo MMO would bring more people into paying Blizzard a monthly fee. Since Diablo's setting and theme is completely different from WoW.

Interesting thing, Blizzard never makes money off of Blizzcon. With all the cost they actually never make a profit off of Blizzcon. With probably no big announcements this year, I am not surprised they are not holding one this year.

As soon as possible on D3 eh? So they finally realized they're really pushing it with people...

@Scorpion1813 I was taking into account taxes and cost of renting the convention center. :)

Scorpion1813
Scorpion1813

@Gelugon_baat: Oh, I am more than aware of that. But that only makes me hate WoW instead of being simply uninterested in it. If they ever turn Diablo into an MMO I would seriously consider murdering the people behind that decision. It's bad enough there's no LAN and single-player requiring an internet connection. @GreySeven: They could actually release one of their titles and they would make way more than $100M.

Without BlizzCon, how will they get their annual 100 million dollars of income? Some executives might have to go without a golden bathtub Christmas bonus this year, I guess.

@Albaficas EA Stocks actually tanked a bit because of The The Old Republic....

@Link3301: Then maybe they should only do Blizzcon once every 2 years. That way they will have more to show at each event. @JackHoleFace00: WoW2 ? No thanks. I'd personally rather have Warcraft 4. There should be at least another WC trilogy before they make another WoW.

@Scorpion1813 Very well said friend. I don't think I have anything more to add to that.

People don't seem to realize how much work goes into these conventions. The developers will have to take their time and resources AWAY from making the game itself, in order to make something to show at such an event. Not to mention, Diablo is in beta at the moment; all classes are known; and so are a lot of the games features. Meaning that there really isn't much they could show off at Blizzcon, while still leaving things for players to discover at launch. As for the other 2 games, I don't know their current situation, but if they are lagging behind on their schedules too, they are better off working on the game rather than taking a few weeks or months out from said schedule to plan a convention. Think of it this way: would you rather have a convention while the game gets delayed by a few months. OR would you rather have no convention and get the game on time?? Instead of giving me more info about the game, I would rather just have the game. I'm glad Blizzard have the balls to cancel Blizzcon so they can focus on what really matters!

I wouldn't be surprised if the games are done or nearly done but they are going to milk their current games to death and right when stockholders start getting concerned over a decline in profits they'll release either the Starcraft expansion or Diablo 3. Which is why there's no Blizzcon lest people clue in to that fact.

lol... so much for Diablo coming out in 2012. Guess there will be an update @ the 2013 Blizzcon. And how is the Starcraft "expansion" (if you want to call it that) not done yet? Sometimes I think these Blizz folks spend more time swimming around in their money (think Scrooge McDuck) than developing games.

Hopefully that means Diablo 3 and Heart of the Swarm this year. Pandaria I'm not all that interested in having quit WoW pretty much, but I may get it a while after release on the cheap for $20.

See what happened is this... they SAID they were going to have Blizzcon 2012 in the year 2012, and then they pushed back the date for Blizzcon 2012 to holiday 2013. You know.. because.. it's what they do.

Seems pretty simple. They have nothing significant to announce yet. All of those attendees would be disappointed by the end to find out there is no new info...
