Japanese publisher's net income surges to ¥1.32 billion ($16.88 million); Dragon's Dogma ships 1 million, will become a series; Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City ships 450,000.
Capcom has started its fiscal year on a strong note. The Japanese publisher announced today that net income for its first quarter ended June 30 rose 290.2 percent from the previous year to ¥1.32 billion ($16.88 million). Net sales for the period jumped 55.8 percent to ¥18.62 billion ($238.2 million).
Capcom called out a number of properties as contributors to its bottom line, including Dragon's Dogma, which the company reiterated has now shipped 1 million copies worldwide. Capcom said the game "struggled" abroad following its release in May, but "exceeded expectations" in the domestic market.
The publisher also said sales of this caliber have "set the stage" for Dragon's Dogma to become a series. This follows news from last month, when Capcom said it plans to develop the original fantasy role-playing game into a major franchise. Additionally, game director Hideaki Itsuno said at the beginning of this month that a full sequel would be developed, provided the fan support is there.
Capcom also updated figures for Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, saying the coldly received third-person shooter has now shipped 450,000 units across the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

A lot of things could be polished to make the game better. The biggest flaw for me was the Pawn/Companion AI, it was absolutely terrible, and not very intuitive at all. They need to give the players more control over which specific types of actions they want their pawns/companions doing, and they should be able to be changed on the fly.
1 Like Almost everything I saw aside from the combat in Dragons Dogma looked absolutely terrible. The stupid companion system, the poor looking towns, and so on, so forth. I just had no desire to buy it, even with the tease of playing RE:6 early.
As for RE:Racoon City... How this game was released so unpolished amazes me. Don't they have beta testers? If not I will gladly sign up.
@VenkmanPHD Stupid companion system? I disagree, the 'Pawns' can be a little bit talkative, but alot of their advices can be very useful. I bought this awhile ago and haven't touched anything else since. This game is awesome DESPITE it's flaws.

I am terrified that Capcom will listen to the bad advice given out by.some gamers for the sequel. Things I DON'T want for D.D.2: More fast travel Level scaling Chocobos Pandas Furry Cat People I just hope Capcom doesn't drop the ball like they did with DMC 2 way back in the day. I also hope they don't try to pump out a quick sequel like EA did with Dragon Age 2 because it takes at least two years to make a good rpg.
@TruthSerum808 I really can't understand why people hate it for games to have a fast travel system since it is completely optional, if you don't like it don't use it I wouldn't really mind not having a fast travel system if the journey is kept fresh and interesting but in DD I knew exactly what was on the other side of the mountain, what's behind that bush blah blah blah
2 Like When a company can record these kinds of profits with such shady and lazy practices, you know gaming is dead. In 10 years you'll be lucky to see a sidequest that isn't DLC, or more than 2 weapons and costumes in any given game
You know what, I didn't think too much on Dragons Dogma. It just didn't appeal to me and I love the RPG scene. I'm glad I was wrong and even happier for the developers. Maybe when it gets cheaper during the holidays, I'll give it a chance and see what the buzz was about.
I'd be giving a silent clap if these numbers weren't riding on the back of a crappy game release in the RE series. :/
Kudos on the Dragon's Dogma sales. That game certainly could have been better, but at least they went in a mostly new direction.
TAKE NOTICE PEOPLE: Dragon's Dogma managed to turn a huge profit at 1million copies world-wide. Meanwhile, products like SWTOR and and Amalur needed to sell 5 times that or more JUST TO BREAK EVEN.

And, comparing the budget of an MMO with a huge license attached to it, to a wholely original console release, is kind of silly.
Still, good job on Capcom for doing something new and being happy with it selling a million. I'd be absolutely THRILLED to see the industry be willing to do that more often. It seems the last 2 years has seen more original stuff compared to the unending parade of sequels. Capcom continues to churn those out, no doubt about it, but the new stuff is always great to see.
@nathangray And its not even 1 million sold- that's just the number they've shipped, and Capcom is still able to say they're satisfied with its performance.
A very surprising result- especially considering how slow Dogma's sales were initially.
Dragon's Dogma is heavily flawed but is still one of my favorite games of this current generation, a sequel is exactly what it needs keep what is good and fix the problems. Capcom's inexperience in this kind of open world is very obvious and hopefully they will learn well and this franchise will become a major Juggernaut in the future
what i want in a sequel.
1. improve the pawn dialogue, try to keep them from talking way too much and at the same time.
2. increase the number of enemies (seriously too much wolves, cyclops and goblins died in my playthrough)
3. if the devs refuse to add an easy fast travel system they should at least put the capital city at the center of the game world not at the far side so at least you won't be forced to go to the same path you went through a dozen times over ever since you were level 5
4. make the story simpler? this is the problem with manty jgames these days they have to always make things so confusing
5. make the side quests feel like they are connected to the main quest (seriously i met up with the duke's wife at the middle of the night then he sent me to the dungeon, i escaped and the next time we met he didn't even mention anything about it)
6. maybe make the mage classes a little different, i didn't really enjoy my time as a mage casting spells that prevents me from moving and takes way too long to cast
7. increase the number of vocations, skills, number of towns, loot items and everything else
8. keep everything else

3- I hate it when people who are used to the conveniences of today's video games, not having a fast travel system was what made this game so great, you have to plan for every trip, make preparation, think about what you're planning to do, the journey there was fun thanks to the difficulty of the games, especially at the start, every battle felt epic, you have to understand that japanese games are hardcore and will never give you a way out, I say never ever add a fast travel system.
4-simpler story ? what game were you playing, the story couldn't be simpler without it turning into minecraft !
5-side quest doesn't have to be connected to the main story, that's why they are called side quests, but if they did involve some of the main story character then I agree, the duke's wife quest was weird.
6-totally agree.

@MaxPainAlchmst I don't mind the part where you don't have a fast travel system that's why I mentioned it what I didn't like was the tediousness of travelling to the same place over and over again which was fun a few hours ago but eventually become routine slaughter with the same enemy type respawning at the same place with unscaled level
Dragon's Dogma was a decisively different game from the throng, and had little mainstream appeal, especially in Western markets. But we, as gamers, found it to be a great experience and by the power of our purchasing decisions we have supported a new IP into becoming a potentially amazing new franchise.

I just really think it was foolish to not make this game true 4 player squad coop. My brother bought this game and enjoyed it, but me and my friend didnt buy because we all wanted to play DD together. So that's two sales capcom missed out on...and im almost certain im not the only one in this boat when saying this so i really do wonder what capcoms sales for DD wouldve been had it be true coop.
I would love for the Dragon Dogma series to be more like Breath of Fire
( 1 - 4 obviously ). With an open environment like Elder scrolls.
That would be one game franchise to remember!
On the other hand Dragon Dogma is pretty good the way it is.

@ZeroX91 What's the deal with the dlc for this? Every PSN update I see another 'Dragon's Dogma: Various dlc - $0.99-2.99' listing. Just curious, anyone actually used any of it? I think there's about $30-40 in micro-dlc at the moment. Knowing Capcom they'll probably decide that this was primarily why the game was popular.
@kohle36 They did episodic content releases once a week for a few months. It started with a day 1 DLC for $1 and had a total of 10 episodes for $1. The 10th episode was just released on 7/24. This was in addition to a bunch of other stuff they released for various prices.
Xbox Live has 22 total pieces of "add-on" content. I'd imagine it is the exact same on the PSN side of things.
They will most certainly release a "Gold" version of the game with all the DLC in it like they seem to be doing with other games.

@y3ivan You're probably right. Oh well, I'll just wait for 2's gold then. If they keep up the current dlc structure, I might never get around to playing the series. Dunno why they can't just release substantial dlc, or forego it altogether.
@kohle36 dont think it will be releasing gold anytime soon. They only release gold version if theres some major dlc expansion pack. Currently DD's dlcs are mostly pointless items and fetch quest, nothing extensive.
possibly capcom might just skipped the whole gold thing and produce DD2 since it did so well in JPN.
They're successful because I'm one of the guys who bought every DLC available for Street Fighter X Tekken and have purchased Dragon's Dogma unused.

3 Like As a Capcom hater, I'm extremely disappointed by this. If Capcom is making 3x profit, they will see that as a mandate to keep perpetuating their nickel and dime tactics.
Oh well, I'll keep buying their games used and enjoying them tremendously, secure in the knowledge that not one of my pennies is in Capcom's pocket.

3 Like It's no different from Activision. What Activision and Capcom both need is a lesson in a form of financial loss. Despite this, Activision's subsequent Call of Duty games will break sale records, motivating them to continue what they're doing.
@jhcho2 only EA and activision need a lesson however capcom are just making good games. i don't see some peoples problem with them unlike ea they have not started no lame online pass. unlike activision they don't try to keep there prices up.so they did some disk locked content once. that was all blown out of perportion. but it is not like they do that all the time with every game. people seem to moan about capcom for things all companies do DLC. where as with ea's online pass not all companies do that and Activisions keeping there prices up not all companies do that trick either.
1 Like Love DD. I'm just hoping they continue with their vision of what made DD great and not butcher it for a 1 % increase in sales and a 100% loss of loyal fans. DD was a game that I'd find myself saying 15 more minutes at 4am which I haven't done in years, dont go Resident evil on it and turn it into something that's already out there a million times and done better a million more times. STICK TO YOUR ORIGINAL VISION! Just look at ORC, a new IP targeted to a more niche market Outsold your established series. Hell, a HD reremake of RE1 would probably outsell ORC...
2 Like I think Dragon's Dogma has the potential to be a great series. I loved the first game for the most part it had some flaws but overall was a great game. They talked about plenty of other kingdoms so there is definitely room to expand.
