Lumines DLC detailed

Blog of Microsoft workers irons out confusion for upcoming Artist, Mission/Puzzle, VS CPU Mode Packs.

While Lumines has been lauded as one of the best new puzzle games on the market, many gamers were already puzzled before they even played the new Xbox 360 version. Lumines Live! confusion stemmed from the game's upcoming downloadable content packs, with some even thinking that Microsoft would charge players to advance further in the game (the claim was later proven to be false).

Over at Gamerscore Blog, a Web site run by members of Microsoft's global marketing team, a post details the upcoming packs as well as the Advanced Pack, which are both now available on Xbox Live.

A trio of packs--Artist, Mission/Puzzle, and VS CPU Mode--are due out sometime in "early 2007." Though there were no specific dates or prices given, the post does offer descriptions of each pack.

The Artist Pack will be used in the Challenge Mode and feature music video skins, like the Madonna demo that was shown at E3 2006. The Mission/Puzzle Pack comes with 50 new problems and three new skins for both Mission and Puzzle modes. And finally, the VS CPU Mode Pack will add 11 computer-controlled opponents (the base game includes only one computer opponent).

For more on Lumines Live!, check out GameSpot's review or listen to a recent audio interview with the game's famed producer, Q Entertainment's Tetsuya Mizuguchi.

    is the game any good?

    Oh and BTW...

I'm not sure what the big disappointment with the base skins are about. I own, both the PSP and 360 versions of this game and I actually like the 360 skins better.

I speculate that if the reviewers at GameSpot had never mentioned "under-par skins" not one visitor would have commented on it. I'd like to see some more opinions from people who actually own the game. Sometimes the words of sincere game players are a bit more honest those of reviewers who are paid to have an opinion--however subjectional that opinion may be.

The way I see it, it's no different than purchasing a full retail game.

And in the case with Lumines Live!, it's well-worth every cent.

These other Xbox Live users need to stop being so cheap and dish out the denars for the quality game that this is. The folks over at Q Entertainment know damn well that a Lumines title is well-worth more than 20 dollars. In any event, they're doing Live subscribers a favor by giving them the option to puchase the game in increments. These subcribers need to get real--not everything is going to go for $5 and a bag of chicken wings.

You shelled out $400+ for a next-gen console. I'm sure you can dish out $25-$30 for a complete game.

This game is great on the PSP, but they stipped everything fun out of the 360 game....for shame. Don't buy this until they actually include VS CPU and Puzzle mode like they already had in the PSP version. I can see paying extra for the video skins but not for stuff that was already in the PSP version. Tsk, Tsk, MS.

One of my best XBL purchases ever.

Then again, I love puzzle games. So, take my words with a grain of salt.

    Still undecided on this one!

I will skip this one.. Next year I will buy an PSP and I will buy Lumines for it.

The Lumines Live have to much extra pack$$ for my pocket And the skins don't look great, either for the music...

What they call "base" looks like unpolished for me.. I feel like paying $15 for a demo. I'm glad that I didn't bought it, I was looking forward this game though.

PSP version is much more "refined" with better skins and music. This is the way to go for me.

i guess people just get nervous when they have to pay for something that doesnt have any physical representation. youre still getting a $40 game for $15. i dont really need music videos since they will inevitably suck and there is just no need for 11 computer opponents. i like the modular release structure.

Wow, the game got a 6.6 here versus a 9.0 on the PSP

that's dumb unless the new packs are free. i already have lumines on psp. and it's $20 on psp now. if u add up all the expansion packs and everything for xbl it's gonna be a lot more than $20

I'll much rather play Lumines on PSP.

This is just another example of developers exploiting the downloadable content option. They strip the game of some content only to re-include it for a premium price.

I would have much rather have everything in one package instead of this "we'll release some of it now and then release more of it later, and charge you for extra skins that should be in the 'base pack'".

  • comthitnuong

    Posted Oct 20, 2006 5:27 pm PT

    it got only a 6.6....

  • Generic_Dude

    Posted Oct 20, 2006 3:39 pm PT

As much as it's been said already, I'd rather they just released the complete package as a retail game and charged me the full amount than handle it like this. Maybe I'm just old-school like that, but I'd rather not buy the game in pieces. All the same, the base package has a lot of fun tucked in there and I think the price is pretty fair... I'm just saying that this trend isn't necessarily a positive one. If anything, it encourages developers to push out unfinished products -- something that I was hoping we'd start seeing less of -- and just charge you in pieces as they got around to completing it. Just meet the f-ing deadline. This is computer science, not rocket science.

trebl1: You mean exorbitant, not absorbent. Not trying to single you out, but there is a HUGE difference there.

    I need Shining

Microsoft should of released Lumines Live as a $39.99 game (like Rockstar Table Tennis). I paid the 1200 for the game and although I've enjoyed it, I think I would of been better off buying Lumines + and playing that on my PS2 when it releases in early January (per the EB games website). Furthermore, not having the Mondo Grosso tracks was a big letdown. Please Microsoft/Q Entertainment include the skin for shining on a free download!

WTF? I Thought the prices were marked, I though they were coming out the same time. Lumines is the biggest crap fest on XBLA, not for the game, but for the way they are handling the game. Just horrible. Q Entertainment should hide their heads in shame.

Want to believe the game is great, what about games like Geometry wars, Mutant Storm or even Jewel Quest all are great games for 10 or 5 bucks a piece. Sorry Q entertainment, you lost a fan.

    I'm a little confused still.

  • Pumper

The game is awesome - yeah, paying for advanced levels, etc. is bogus, but there's enough in BASE mode plus on-line battle to keep you busy at only $15.00.

Compare that to $58. 00 for King Kong or that Xmen which unlike Lumines, have ZERO longevity and you get the picture. Hands down, Lumines is the best thing to hit Live Arcade since GeoWars.

Oh, the Advanced Mode Skins and music are excellent.

It may have just been better to have released all of the content as a retail game. . . or at least give players the option of buying it that way.

I saw Lumines for 19.99 and Lumines 2 for 29.99 for PSP, or something like that. Considering that this is not just a remake of an old game, but a current, trendy game that people are paying for on the PSP, I don't think it is necessarily wrong for the different packages to come out, as long as the price doesn't get absorbent. We are used to paying more for a game on a console then a portable... at least I think so, I don't play portables... I just don't think that it was implemented well. And if they overcharge for the packages, I think that would not be fair either. I never got to play it on PSP so I am having fun with what I got. And my wife loves puzzle games, so I am glad this is one we can play together.

    Nov - Artist Pack
    Dec - Mission/Puzzle
    Jan - VS CPU
