User Rating: 7.6 | Mortal Kombat Trilogy PS
Mortal Kombat has always been a controversial series. Realistic characters pitted against each other in real time, and did some of the most gruesome moves imaginable. Full decapitation, broken bones, taunting - it was all there and all flew in the face of the casual gamer. As a result - the arcade games were a success. But can that continue on the home version? Fear not, developer Avalanche and Midway have collaborated well on bringing this much - loved series home. First of all is the roster - the sheer size of it. Every character from Mortal Kombat's 1 through 3 are here and represented well. There is also a brand new character, but naturally they are very hard to get. Amazingly, all characters are available immediately, you dont need to work for them. As well as this, all arenas, or levels, are also open immediately. The game has absolutely no progression system, and feels more like a beefed up arcade game rather than a console game. As such, this is a game that is strictly for fans, or for people with friends arounf. But with Namco showing how home conversions of arcade fighter's should be done, why would you bother with this? I'll tell you why. Fatalities. Pure and simple - it is what drew people to the game initially. And they are all here, in all their glory. As such, the game is definately not for the young of heart, there is a definate mature theme to this game. It's presentation and even it's voice over make it mature, but ocassionaly the game tries to hard to gain it's audience's attention in it's presentation, and not in it's fighting engine. That being said, the fighting is for the most part good. However, combo tactics, juggles and even special moves are nigh on impossible to do, so the game returns to a button mashing slug fest. While that would be enough for the casual observer, this is not enough for fighting fans, who will be severely disappointed in the games ease. However the graphics, sound and feel to the game is arcade perfect, right down to the character selection screens. However, this will not be enough to sustain fighting fans. While undoubtedly a good game, and a pinnacle for the Mortal Kombat series, it hasn't grown in areas that the competition is easily running circles around. Still, if you have some friends over, this is a good game to bring out and have some laughs over some of the gameplay specialties like the Babality and Fatality.
