John Tobias wanted to expand the MK universe even more. MKM: Sub-Zero didn't do so well, but it wasn't a flop. He wanted to expand on the rivalry between the US Special Forces and the Black Dragon. 1999 saw the release of Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.

It's a few years before the first tournament. Kano has broken out members of his Black Dragon clan. They didn't count on Jax to get on their case. As Jax chases after his enemies, he learns that Kano has stumbled upon an ancient secret.

First of all, the graphics for Special Forces are good. It's a PS1 game people! It's not supposed to be perfect! That's that.

The control scheme for the game is solid. Using combos in the game is simple, as the buttons used flash on the screen. Firing a weapon is easy to since enemies are auto targetted.

Sound is ok. The music in the game is what really shines through. It's also funny to hear Jax insult his enemies.

Originally, Sonya was to be playable for a co-op mode or choosable in single player. John Tobias left the MK team during development and that was taken out.

Many say that the story conflicts with the rest of the MK story. It doesn't. The metal arms that Jax uses in the game are prototypes and both him and Kano didn't know the name of Outworld, only that it was some other dimension. Simple alterations to make the story fit in.

Special Forces is not a bad game. Don't listen to what reviewers say about it. Sure it may be short, but it is a good collectable for any gamer if you can find it nowadays.
