While graphically bland, this is forgivable given the addicting nature of the card game.

User Rating: 5 | Monster Rancher Battle Card GB GBC
Monster Rancher Battle Card GB is done in bland pokemon style graphics, but doesnt measure up to pokemon's graphical standards. Overall the Pokemon Trading Card game for GB is done better in every respect. The gameplay is much the same as the it's Playstation Counter part. You have three monsters, fans of the series will recognize them immediatly, and a deck of full of attack and defense cards for each of them. A coin is flipped before the battle begins, whoever is first gets a GUTS turn at the beginning of the battle. A GUTS turn is choosing to discard up to 5 cards to get 5 GUTS. GUTS are required to use different moves for monsters, both attack and defense. The better the move, the more guts are generally required. Descriptions of the card, and what it does can be brought up by pressing the select button. The player who gets the first GUTS screen can only discard 2 cards. The player who gets 2nd goes straight to an attack turn after the 1st player gets their GUTS move. Generally though you wont get any cards you can attack with on the first turn. You generally wont want to discard 5 cards, it leaves you defenseless. each monster has a set amount of life and some are more bothersome to dispatch than others given the nature of the block and dodge they have (Mochi, Pixi, Hare etc.). This game is set up a little differently than the Playstation version. In the Playstation version you are given an artufll map of the whole world. In this version you go through various levels to move the weak plot along, but then most card games dont have any plot to speak of, so this doesnt count much against the game. If you like card games this one is a good distraction if you plan on going on a road trip, but it's not good for much else unless you are one of the more extreme fans of the television series, or other games.
