PSX version is awful !

User Rating: 7 | Metal Slug X PS
As a hardcore Metal Slug fan, I have to disagree with Gamespot's review. Although it's a fairly good game, most of its appeal, coming from crazy graphics and animations, is gone because of the poor PSX video memory. If you spent quite some time playing the Neogeo/Arcade/Mame version, you will very likely be disapointed when looking at this one. Most of the animation frames have been ejected, the remaining ones not even reworked to better fit the newly minimalist animation of this version. All explosions and fire effects were reduced to a single texture that has been re-scaled to tiny and re-zoomed to it original size in order to save some precious kilobytes... All of this graphic butchery takes away the feedback you had blowing up stuff in the arcade version. Yes people, if the PSX was really faster than a NeoGeo (the game here shows must less slowdowns than on NeoGeo), it had limited video memory and the NeoGeo didn't have this problem because of the games being store and streamed from a ROM (cartridge). There are also some sound issues. The Neogeo had limited sounds channels, thus the sound of the game was designed accordingly. Here, because of the PSX's 24 channels, too many that WEREN'T SUPPOSED TOO play at the same time (instead of being killed by the next sound of the same kind), which creates cacophony and makes the game's audio very hard to enjoy (keep in mind in this game you're constantly shooting and blowing stuff up). If you never had your hands on a Metal Slug, I strongly sugest that you stay away from this one or you won't understand where's all the hype from. Try the original version, then you'll understand how graphically fun and superior this series was (and still is to most garbage that comes out today).
