In 1999, at 12 years old, I played Metal Gear Solid for PlayStation 1. It was the greatest gaming experience I ever had. I remember calling my friend on the phone in panic after Meryl had been shot by Sniper Wolf. That's how moved I was by the events in this game. The Otacon-Sniper Wolf scene could bring one to tears (not me of course). The story is even more engaging in MGS4.

I now see Snake aging, dying, and I feel like this is a real person I used to know 10 years ago. I feel like I was really there with him saving the world from nuclear disaster. Maybe it's because I was 12 years old when I first played MGS1 and my mind was used to living in imaginary worlds.

Everyone knows, the graphics are amazing and the cut scenes were too many and too long, but it didn't really bother me. I enjoyed seeing the rest of the story unfold. The gameplay, however, is very similar to all the other MGS games.

One of the greatest moments was the return to Shadow Moses Island. It was like I was going back to place I hadn't seen in ages. I was surprised to see Raiden's form in this one (this is not even his final form). It sort of seems like he tries too hard to be a badass, but his appearances in the cutscenes were quite awesome. I was glad to see him go at the end of MGS2, but he redeemed himself in this game.

I think you really have to play the first Metal Gear Solid, wait 10 years, and then play MGS4 to get the full effect of this game.
