i just can't wait for this, looks amazing snake or no snake it's still kojima, therefore most likely great
Producer Shigenobu Matsuyama shows off a trailer for Raiden's upcoming action game at Microsoft's E3 2010 press conference.
You always know something exciting is about to happen when Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima takes the stage. He did so to great applause at Microsoft’s 2010 E3 press conference, but he unfortunately didn’t spend much time in front of the audience. He did, however, state that what he was there to show was something new and unique. Kojima also mentioned that just as Metal Gear hero Snake passed the torch to the androgynous Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2, Kojima would now defer to Metal Gear Solid: Rising producer Shigenobu Matsuyama. And with that, Matsuyama took the stage and introduced an intriguing new trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Rising, the upcoming action game featuring a part-cyborg Raiden slicing up some of the freakiest automatons you’ve seen this side of those mooing gekkos from Metal Gear Solid 4.
The trailer begins with a simple pan from the hilt of a long blade to its point. We see the Kojima productions logo, and the scene cuts to a shot of multiple grungy industrial fans and then gives us a glimpse of the floor, which is covered with empty shell casings. We then watch a creepy mechanized foe stalk about the environment as if sniffing out its prey. This robotic menace looks legitimately scary--a frightening sight in this dilapidated futuristic environment. A fleeting shape whizzes above several times, before dropping in front of this hulking threat: it's Raiden, proudly displaying his metallic physique and mechanized jaw.
What follows is a grand fight scene in the dramatic Metal Gear tradition. This snazzy fisticuffs shows off Raiden’s skills with his blade, which is sharp enough to apparently slice through the most resilient metals. Raiden emerges victorious, and the bot explodes in a disgusting gusher of white goo. Raiden picks up the neon skeleton of the felled freak, and after a brief moment of consideration, he crushes it in his hand. A montage of melee combat follows, showing off Rising’s location-based damage. We watch Raiden slice up limbs and vehicles, as the word "Cut" is spliced in. The word weaves into various phrases that pop up: "Cut at will," "Cut what you will," and "What will you cut?" The trailer ends with a display that would make comedian Gallagher proud, though Raiden didn’t smash a watermelon with a hammer: he sliced it into delicious, easily handled chunks.
Clearly, Metal Gear Solid: Rising will center on carving enemies into disgusting pieces of flesh and electronics. While we don’t know much about how Rising will play, the short trailer we saw on Microsoft’s stage whet our appetite for a flurry of location-based damage and furious swordplay. For now, we’re left wondering just how many things there will be to cut in Kojima’s upcoming action game--and are left considering the game’s tagline: "Lightning Bolt Action."
I remember Raiden from MGS2 and I really disliked the character. He was completely 2 dimensional and failed to bring anything unique to the series. Sure, his suit was wicked, but he looked nearly identical to about a dozen other animie/game avatars. I was hoping this would be a late release to MGS 4 similar to substance on the original XBOX. If I cannot play as snake, I may just pass on this title.
@raptor400k the reason his sword is so strong is that its a high frequency blade that vibrates really fast to make it super sharp. Also the huge cutscenes are a staple of the MGS series so im guessing they'll be just as long
I'm not a big fan of Raiden but if anything maybe they can really make him more cooler here(he got boring in 4) and explain why he's sword is that strong(or did they do that and I just missed it). Though the fighting does look cool(I'm wondering how gory this will really be), I want to know more about the stealth and how, if it does, affect the story if you play completely stealthy.I'm also hoping you can shoot in this one and the cutscenes aren't as long as in the last 1, the mission briefings and the epilogue was painfull. Glad its coming out on PS3 :)
@sheah1 Which I am totally fine with. I commented on another article that "Lightning Bolt" will probably be something along the lines of stalking your prey, striking from the shadows (Or rooftops, etc :P), then returning into hiding and continue. Akin to a lightning bolt.
@Transparanoia Apparently in the latest interview, it was said that Raiden's stealth will be more akin to hunting, which just sounds like the sex.
Have you seen the smooth animations, not to mention the high poly model of Raiden? HECK I will buy this game stealth or not. I'm already try to figure out what Metal Gear is all about. Finally Metal Gear without the need to buy that crappy Sony console.
@HollowNinja Turns out I was right. http://au.ps3.ign.com/articles/109/1098800p1.html "While not shown in the trailer, Rising will also have elements of stealth. Players can choose to play the game using sneak mechanics like a more conventional MGS game, or those who are more confident in their action skills and jump direction into the fight." Which you could do in MGS4. Sure, HOW you play will be different, but this isn't a Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry. You could tell that by the trailer. The enemies were too slow for one, and the camera was way too low.
@XSV-Vendetta Well the release date says sometime in 2010 (probably fall like you said), and you have to remember that kojima industries have been busy at work on peace walker while kojima himself has been helping with both castelvania and monster hunter (I say helping, I mean playing, but can you blame him?) and from what I saw from the video, this is an amazing game. No exaggeration, this is absolutely nothing like I've ever seen before, the graphics alone are brilliant while the gameplay looks revolutionary and they must have taken absolutely ages to make, cutting through ANYTHING, just beautiful. Well, there's my Kojima defence, since I'm a massive fanboy.
why are people hoping for stealth...the subtitle is "lightning bolt action"....the chances of that meaning this game will be stealth heavy are pretty low..
Hopefully they release a trailer with the spirit of the mgs series. Hard to explain what that means, unless you have played it for yourself. Also hope there is a good amount of stealth(again, with the spirit of mgs). If it has those, it'll give me good incentive for a buy. Of course, on top of a hopefully good story...
Considering that Kojima announced this game at E3 2009 I'd say that they're slacking, unless of course it's coming out sometime this fall. Still I've found nothing about an official release date and that video at the Microsoft press conference was the first and it only showed thirty seconds of actual gameplay.
@Kevin-V - If you say so. I found it to be one of the most overhyped games of this generation, if "game" can really be applied. Maybe it gets good at some point, I got sick of watching movies and waiting for the game part.
Hideo Kojima the maker of metal gear solid said in the announcement trailer that this game will still be stealth !!!! So as long as it's stealth, i will buy this game!
@Transparanoia I doubt there will be any way to play stealthy in this one. It's a "Lightning Action" game, they're going make it more like Ninja Gaiden. I'm anticipating it because it looks fun, but there's always SOMEONE who expects to just play MGS4 again.
raiden looked cool throughout. here and there you where able to play as him but now they are making a whole game about him andit looks awesome. raidens sword has electricity running through it giving it the ability to stun people if they arent already dead and given raidens synthetic bodey he is probably 3x stronger than before already is the sword able to cut through so much given such power inside, now its backed up by an awesome cyborg, raiden is invincable
oh ja .... and pls lol ... make longer gameplay man i mean u play mgs4 maybe 5 hours and the rest of 10 hours are cutscense lol ... we neeeeed longer singel playyer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
man awesome... but i rlly hope that u can shoot with riden .... cause i think it cld be rlly difficult to make a good game with jst the hackn slash gameplay ... i mean its metal gear solid. ... yes it wd be rlly cool to combine raiden hackns gameplay with a lil bit of shooting and stealth... be carefull dont ruin the mgs saga
@Zrent They did the same thing with MGS 2. I'm really pumped for this game. This change is exactly what the series needs. I'm not saying it was getting boring, it was just as fun as ever, but I know I wanted to play as Raiden again after seeing him in MGS 4.
well its not totally MGS that we are used to, but looks fun i bet kojima didnt want to hand best MGS to Xbox360 that easily
I'm curious to see exactly how a lack of Kojima will influence gameplay and story. I hope they release some kind of story trailer soon. That weird mech thing looked to have a vaguley similar design to the Outer Heavans FROG's and the Beasts.
@CanesThing26 -- This was Microsoft's press conference and was considered to be Xbox-specific content. The game is coming to other platforms, however.
Will there be a game this time, or will it be a movie where you occasionally push buttons like MGS 4?
great game.definetely a must buy.but it doesnt deserve the SOLID in ots name.its unorthodox. + you ruined my expectations for my beloved and always true 2 franchise.WHY DID YOU NAME IT METAL GEAR SOLID????????
@HollowNinja Who said you can't play stealthy though? MGS4 trailers had Snake shooting everything, it's to be expected that Rising trailers would show the same thing (Albeit cutting :P). And heck, it's not like you couldn't play the previous ones like an action game anyway. I remember trying to play all of MGS2 in an alert phase, that was difficult, but doable.
i wonder if i cut off someones hands, unable to weild a weapon, would he run away, kneel into submissive, die, or try and bite me xD
@mesteve360 -- The series has already been on non-Sony platforms, including the original Xbox and the GameCube.
that trailer looked great. i was amazed at the precision of his slices. seems like we'll finally get the chance to step into the shoes of these crazy robot ninjas we know and love. even if there is less focus on stealth (although ninjas ARE very stealthy), this still looks like an amazing game, and a fresh take on the series.
