Classic RPG that spawned sequels and held the attention of happy RPG fans for years. Aged graphics; great, fun story.

User Rating: 8 | Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete PS
Lunar: SSSC is one of the games that RPG fans thrive upon. It is a quest game with an evolving cast, lofty goals and plot twists to keep you interested. The deep anime influences and bromides don't hurt either. A traditional console RPG, Lunar is a tour de force of good production values in the gameplay mechanics, sound and cut scenes as well as the excellent packaging, a trademark of Working Designs. The sound quality is especially appreciated considering the material present in the original Sega CD release. No offense to the SCD version, but progress is progress. Included in the presentation box of the game are a game soundtrack CD, cloth map, "Making of" CD and the hardback instruction manual/hint book. The game starts out in the small village of Burg with the protagonist, Alex dreaming of bigger things. He and his friends Luna, Ramus and Nall are enthralled by stories of The Four Heroes, particularly Dragonmaster Dyne, who was raised in Burg. Numerous cast members will become available as Alex and company begin traveling through the game world, eventually reaching a maximum of five in your party. The members of the group are not under the player's control, however. The game's plot determines who comes along for the ride at certain points. The magic and attack systems behave reasonably well and you will be able to find the best attacks and tactics to use on each of the games many enemies and bosses. The battle AI is limited to a few options (think Game Arts and you understand) but it is entirely serviceable. The small sprites that comprise the party have not aged well in the years since the original release of Lunar: The Silver Star. The graphics are certainly not the focus of games such as this, but it should be mentioned. My wife couldn't understand why I continued to play this game to completion and beyond based upon her dislike of tiny, garbled characters. To each their own. Lunar is a classic in the classic RPG genre and not a game to be missed. If these types of linear RPGs appeal to you, then this is a very good game to get. Working Designs has proved several times that the forgotten games that they localize are worth the effort and this is the best example of that skill in practice
