A Quality and Fun Timekiller

Ever had an hour or two before you have to get ready for that concert or football game? League of Legends is a great fantasy-themed MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game to help pass the time.

Ten players are found in an online matchmaking queue, and are pitted against each other as teams of five, hoping to destroy each other's base. There are over 100 characters to play as, and thousands upon thousands of optimization combinations to be purchased with currency earned in-game. No two games will ever be exactly alike.

LoL, as it's popularly called, has multiple "arenas" and gametypes in order to entertain a vast majority of players. A standard 5v5 deathmatch is played on the Summoner's Rift, and a 5v5 dominion game, similar to capture the tower, is played on the Crystal Scar. The maps that Riot Games, creators of LoL, have designed and put to good use are diverse, elegant, and deliver a sense of clarity to the players--all of which are elements at Riot's core priorities for improving the game.

I play LoL very often, so I have experienced the community of the game, the different personalities that make the game so diverse in it's playstyle. There are both good and bad aspects to such a game, as there is a popular rivalry it has with another game, Defense of the Ancients 2 (DOTA 2);both of which have an impressive fan base and similar core mechanics. There are many arguments as to why LoL is better than DOTA 2, as well as the other way around. To me, though, they seem to play very, very differently. LoL's design seems less clunky and crowded to me, and I like the ideas around the possible characters to play, such as undying vikings, archers, mummies, and creatures of all different races.

LoL is a great, free-to-play computer game for all ages who want a game that requires strategic, fast paced thinking. I've definitely enjoyed playing it.
