Catastrophy

The "Indie Game" area of XBOX360 is an underrated area of video games as much as the "Wiiware" for the Wii. It's true that some of the games in that area are a waste of time (and points) but this game is one of the ones that are worth your time.

Despite a bizarre plot as well as misleading title (the cat doesn't shoot out lasers, should of been called light cat) this game has plenty of depth to keep you playing for a long time. This game is slightly similar with "VVVVVV" like that game it's a non linear platform actioner and is retro style. The graphics I think are very good they really have the throwback feel of the old 80's computer games for the "Atari ST", "Commodore 64" and others and I just thought it was a refreshing feel since I'm a kid from that decade. The music is good, it really fits the game. Most importantly I really like the game play, it's pretty much the simplistic platforming action where you have to get from point A to B without touching/falling into hazards as well as enemies. But that's fine by me because as a saying goes less is more, I like games that cause you to not just use your head a little more and in this game you really have to. There are tons of rooms to explore, each room is like a new challenge you never know what is going to be next. And also you don't get hopelessly lost there are plenty of checkpoints that also act as storage for the keys you collect but also a warp to get to places you left off far from reach. This solves that fundamental problem most non linear platform games have of having to do pain in the butt back tracking. There are no boss battles there is only the final boss battle, but it's a fun boss battle and breaks from the cliche of having to hit a boss in the same spot numerous times, it's more of a race against time.

Another thing which is unique is when you get the keys you have to answer a trivia question some of them are typical educational ones, some simple, or just plain weird, so you can say this game is also a bit like "Trivia Pursuit".

It's true the game is easy at least by my standards and you can get though it quickly, it's one of those games where it's like the perfect rental you can play though and then play though again months later to enjoy and appreciate once more.

So if your a fan of the genre and you want something different, or if you a rookie to the genre then this game is a worthy edition.
