Lame graphics, linear levels and weak story VS fun combat, long gameplay and funny banter...take your pick...

User Rating: 7 | Hunted: The Demon's Forge PC
Hunted: The demon's forge is a 3d hack and slash game set in a fantasy setting, but with a cover system typical for modern shooters. While the game definitely has major downsides in its weak graphics, weak story and weak level design, it offers nevertheless hours of fun combat once you get into it. A big positive is also the length of game, which is not typical for these types of games.

Graphics 6/10
Graphics are out of date to say the least. While the main characters themselves as well as enemies look acceptable, the main heroine is even quite hot looking, the environmental graphics are really bad. Outside you will come across grass and trees which look like they are from 2007 and were considered purely average even then. While inside, in dungeons, you will notice the lame light and shadow effects or the lack thereof. Besides these facts, the game is not optimised for the PC and the graphical settings don't improve much no matter how high you set them.
On a positive note, the graphics are not that bad that they would distract you from the gameplay, and as I said the character models are mostly decent looking, especially looking at the main heroine never gets old.

Sounds 6/10
Sounds are simply uninteresing. The soundtrack contains average songs so that you won't get bored during fights, but you will not remember or like any of them. The sound effects, monster sounds, sword sounds etc. are there just to be there. Sometimes you might chuckle, I know I did by the minotaur monster sounds, which have been at least partly copied from some older games/standard effects (I think Gogs in Might and Magic 7 did the exact same sound).
On a positive note the voice acting is mostly solid and the banter between the two main heroes - a male melee barbarian and a ranged elven huntress - is at times quite funny alas at other times gets tedious.

Story 5/10
The story has a fairly good premise, which you unfortunately learn only later on. Without giving spoilers I can say that there is an evil substance, called Sleg, which enthralls anyone who drinks it. And your main quest is to defeat a mercenary turned warlord who is enthralled by it to built a monster army. The good thing here are the two endings, a good and bad one, depending whether you drank sleg during your gameplay (gives you a major boost during very hard fights) or you didn't.
As I said, the premise is good, what is bad is the execution. Your only objectives during the whole game are: go from A to B, go from B to C, go from C to D. There are two bosses which at least partly break the routine, but other than that the whole story is about finding excuses to send you as far as possible so that it takes a long time and many fights to get there. You even won't learn the good stuff about the story until the end.

Gameplay 7/10
The levels suffer from heavy linearity which is in fact quite typical for these 3d action based games. Still Hunted at least partly breaks this by offering you 8 hidden areas which you can explore, in which you solve puzzles and in which you can find magical weapons for your characters. Yet still, the 8 areas are only a small area of a long game, the puzzles are very basic and the magical weapon have a exact amouth of charges (very few) after which they become quite useless.
The combat itself is quite fun once you get used to it. The game is cover based (think Gears of war or CoD) as offers some interesting firefights, with bows and crossbows. Alas you can only learn and upgrade 3 spells and 3 skills with each of the two main characters. This is too little, more skills were needed to make the combat really awesome.

Replayability 8/10
What is the reason for the high rating? There are several, mainly:
1. Co-op action with your friend/brother/etc. is fun and fluid. While the AI does a good job when playing alone, the co-op is even better.
2. Fun, frantic and hard (on higher difficulty) battles. Each major battler is usually in a larger arena not in a small hall, so you have a place to try different tactics.
3. Great length for a game of this type. Normally I can finish a 3d action game like this in 8-10 hours, Hunted took me almost twice that much. The length means you won't remember the maps so much so its more fun to replay them.
4. Several different articles to gather if you missed them. These include lore entries, bestiary entries, secrets, puzzles, dragon tears and of course gold which is used to built custom arena maps for multiplayers matches.
5. The crucible tool which allows creation of own arenas where you can fight against various monsters. The more gold you have gathered during gameplay the more different enemies and maps you can create.

All in all this game means fun for more than a few hours, especially when playing co-op with someone. While not being top of the line and while having many negative qualities, it is still a game that fans of 3D action genre or fantasy setting will mostly enjoy. That is, unless they come across some bugs, which aren't game breaking yet some of them are annoying.
