This is a pretty decent NES shooter.

Gotcha! The Sport! Is a pretty good shooter for the NES. Looking at the cover, you may think differently, but it really is good. After I got it, I plugged it in and tried it out. This may have worked out a bit better if I had gotten the instructions with it, but I didn't. After getting game over once for running out of bullets, once for running out of time, and once for some reason that I didn't know at the time, I realized that you are supposed to use the controller in port one for something other than starting the game.
It took me a while, but I finally figured out that you are supposed to move right and left with the d-pad. After that it took me a little bit longer to realize that this is a light gun version of capture the flag. After I figured this all out, it was a cinch to beat the levels.
The game is a rail/first person shooter hybrid in that you can only move from side to side, but it is in the first person. It isn't exactly a rail shooter, as the game only moves if you make it. The enemies are pretty generic, but do the job well. The first level is a jungle scene, and all the enemies are in woodland camouflage; the second level is a city, and all the guys look like 80's punk rock rejects; and so on and so fourth. The graphics are typical 8-bit graphics, but the variety of color helps you distinguish between different things such as grass and foliage.
The hit detection is pretty good, unless your T.V. is on an angle like mine is. In that case you had better move it, or yourself. I did the latter. Some of the guys are small and hard to hit, especially when they are laying on the ground. Other guys are in trees, and still others are running across the screen on the ground. There are some pretty cool effects too, like when an enemy runs behind a waterfall, and you can barely make out his shape behind there.
The only problem is that the game starts out on beginner difficulty, and there is no way to change it. As far as I can tell, you have to make your way through all of the beginner levels and then you get to harder ones. I haven't gotten that far yet, so I could be wrong.
In all, this game is a very solid shooter in the NES library, and I recommend it to anyone that likes shooters on the NES.
