God of War: Chains of Olympus showcases what the PSP is truly capable of.

User Rating: 9.5 | God of War: Chains of Olympus PSP
God of War: Chains of Olympus is the much anticipated title that many Playstation Portable owners have been waiting for since it was announced. Based on events before the original God of War, you see Kratos as a pledged champion to the Gods. The story doesn't flesh its self out as much as the previous GoW games, but that isn't totally bad. Its a portable system, not a console... so in a way you don't want to have a deeply engrossing story simply because of the portable pick up and play nature. Even if the story isn't the best, everything else about this game is amazing. The replay value is great, I'm pretty sure that I have gone through it at least 9 times on different difficulties and still wanna play.

As far as visuals go, the graphics in my opinion are even better than that of the PS2 titles, especially looking at the graphics comparison here at Game Spot. Between the characters, the environments, and the cut scenes, everything is top notch. A huge amount of work went into the detail of this game, the textures are sharp, the characters animate well, and on top of it all there is barely any slowdown. In addition, this game is the practically non-existent load times. In its entirety it loads a total of 30 seconds max all the way through, which is nice considering that the PSP is plagued by load times on some titles. Now that brings me around to that all important aspect called sound. It holds its own with the PS2 titles in all aspects. Considering that it has to pump out the violent, and over the top sound effects GoW is known for, it does a great job pushing it out through those little speakers or any set of headphones. As we all know one of the other things that plagues the PSP is its controls on most games, but that isn't an issue with GoW. It controls very well on the PSP. The evade function is a little bit different this time around because of the lack of the second analog stick. Now it has been moved to L+R+Analog. It works as well as you would want it to most of the time. As with the gameplay in itself, many of the moves from the previous games are seen here, and the upgraded magic system works out very well. Rather than having to switch between magic abilities like in previous games, you use R+Face Buttons. Its not as much of a hassle to switch on the fly and you can use some pretty neat magic combos in succession of one another.

All in all Ready at Dawn has done an great job with putting an authentic God of War experience on the PSP, and the only thing more that I could ask for is an original God of War remake. Everything you would ever want in a God Of War game, can now go with you where ever you go. If you are a God of War fan or are just looking for an amazing game for your portable, this is the one you should buy.
