Robot battling in turn based combat

User Rating: 8.2 | Front Mission 4 PS2
Front Mission 4 is a game in which you control giant mechs (walking robots about the size of a house). In this game you alternate between tow main characters. One is Darrill, a member of the U.S.C Army, 332nd Company. The other is Elsa, a former member of the French Army, but was transferred to the E.C. Tactical Corps.
This game centers around a story of these characters discovering a secret that causes them to turn against their own countries. Both of the main characters will gain other followers, and they will eventually even come together to become one big team.
The combat is turn based, in which you get a certain amount of AP (Action Points), which allow you to take actions. Each action takes AP, such as every square you move(the battlefield is divided into a grid of squares), and you have a set maximum amount you may move. Then other actions such as attack take AP as well, and depending on the weapon is how much AP you will spend attacking with it.
There are many types of weaponry, allowing you to customize your battle strategy. Some of these weapons include machineguns, rifles, grenade and rocket launchers, and missile batteries. These are regulated by your mechs maximum weight. Each mech has a maximum weight that it can bear, and so that regulates what weapons your mech may carry. By customizing your mech with better parts, which may be purchased between missions, you will be able to carry more weight, and that will allow you to carry better weapons.
Also, you may teach your pilots skills to improve their combat abilities. These skills include such things as increased accuracy, more shots from your guns per turn, and more defensive skills such as increased dodging capabilities, no damage, decreased damage, and other such things.
To destroy an enemy mech, you must destroy the core (known as the body). Each mech is divided into 4 sections that can take damage. These sections are Left Arm, Right Arm, Body, and Legs. Your mech will continue to function as long as the body is intact, but if you lose an arm for instance, you can no longer use what you had equipped on that arm, or if your legs are destroyed you can only move one square at a time.
This is a fun game, not the best I have ever played, but it is a thought provoking game that requires a lot of strategy. It has a pretty good story, and doesn’t have any flaws really to speak of. If you have played any of the other Front Mission games, or like games with giant mechs battling, then this is a game you should consider.
