If you have an Xbox360 I would appreciate it if you would answer the poll. If you do not have an Xbox360 please do not answer the poll. I'm just curious to see how many people are really interested, or even care, about the add on. Thanks, everyone.

nope, too expensive.. maybe when all of the great games stop coming i might get it. but from the looks of it.... i wont.. Unlike the ps3, people bought movies instead of games because there are too few./.strategyking92
That's a really stupid comment, there are plenty of good PS3 games.

oh you mean all those great games that are available for the ps3 too?
the only games i am playing for the 360 are Guitar hero III and COD4.... both on the ps3.
I bought it a while back when it was $199 and let me tell you, once you pop in King Kong, theHD DVD that comes in the box, its like visual orgasm.degenerazI got one when it hit 180 with six free hd dvds and love it. To those saying the standalones are better the base model toshibas only do 1080i the add on does 1080p. I lov e mine watch 300 or transformers on it sometime and tell me its not a huge difference.
I would like one, but not for that price. If it dropped to $129 I'd probably get it.murlow12
It is at $129.....
hddvd sucks compared to bluray. it's hella expensive. ps3 comes with the superior player built in. hddvd = fail (confirmed)NaiKoN9293
Do you research anything you say? HD DVD has ALWAYS been the cheaper format. Picture quality and sound the 2 are identical. The differences lie in the features and HD DVD has BluRay spanked in that. Studio support is the next big difference (that can easily change) and as of now I'd say it's about even since HD DVD has the overall better studios, but BluRay has a couple more.

Why don't you calm down before you hurt yourself? I have no idea what the hell you're talking about but both HD DVD and Blue Ray are capable of 1080p.
Anyway, to the question at hand... Yes, I have the add-on. Comes with 6 free movies right now (King Kong in the box and 5 in the mail) so it's a decent way to start your HD library. I tend to have plenty of expendable income, though. I pretty much bought the player as an excuse for buying the ultimate collectors HD version of Blade Runner in just over a week from now.
I'm pretty obsessive about audio-visual quality so I get a lot out of it, having HD movies is really, really nice, but it's also really obvious that the quality isn't that notable for most people. If you sat the average person down to watch an HD version of a movie one day, then the SD version a week later, they wouldn't be able to tell you the difference in most cases. Add to that the fact that most people don't even have a way to watch HD content (I have a friend who just purchased a 360 and needed to hook it in through his VCR because his tv only had RF inputs... time for an upgrade I'd say) and you can see why this "HD war" isn't really going anywhere at all.

What are you talking about, both the Hd dvd format and bluray both are capable of producing 1080p, are you talking about the hd dvd players? because the older models put out 720p, but the newer models are now generally 1080. The only real diffrence is studio support and bluray can hold more content (does not equal better quality, just longer movies).
To answer the topic, no but I have a stand alone hd dvd player.
I want one really badly, but Im worried I'll spend 150 quid on it with 4 films, get 5 films free and never buy another again
and there aren't many PS3 games worth looking at.....Haze looks interesting but too much like crysis and MGS4 is looking worse and more unplayable everyday

I would like to clear up a few things on your post if I may.
1) What is your definition of Cheap? For an HDDVD with 1080p capabilities it is roughly the same price as a Blu Ray player which they obviously are all 1080p. $300ish. Iam not getting into how bigof a difference between 1080i and 1080p, I amjust statingthey facts. Also, I would like to point out that HDDVDmedia HAS ALWAYS been more expensive then Blu Ray. HDDVDbarely moves on pricing when BDA is constantly having BOGO sales. So you can eitherA) Get a HDDVD player @$200-$300 then pay full price for media. or B)Get a Blu Ray player for$280-$300 (Samsung1400 killer player) and get tonsof movies from $9.99 to $23.99. http://www.jr.com/http://www.frys.com/http://www.amazon.com/ exc. I won't do the math but if you are getting each movie at almost half price and you buy 10 movies a year you willsave $100 your first year. BDA has movies on sale MONTHLY. Do the long term math though. DVD has been around for 10 years so.... For most this is a major savings. Ialready have over a 100 Blu Rays (I have HDDVD too, just not near as many).
Your second point,LMFAO. This is obviously an extremely biased remark as you clearlydo not own ANY Blu Rays. Blu Ray is a superior technology. HDDVD is already tapped. Don't believe me? Explain to me why Transformers did not get a Lossless Audio track? Ohh wait, Paramount explained it already... NOT ENOUGH SPACE. More Space, Advantage Blu Ray, More Bandwidth, Advantage Blu Ray= better picture and obviously vastly superior sound. Night and day difference with sound.
WTF are you smoking when talking about Studio? There is NO contest.

Overall Blu Rays average out at a higher VQ and AQ over HDDVD from ALL 4 major High Def review sites.
Ok, I'll start from the beginning:
A) Don't expect the BOGOs to continue forever, it's Sony's way of trying to boost sales figures. It's subsidized just like Toshiba selling players for $100 was. As far as cost of average media, if you don't count those sales (and you shouldn't since they are just that, sales) the average costs are the same. Combo discs are more expensive yes, but you will find few HD DVD users who agree with that concept and won't agree that it is flawed. You failed to acknowledge that HD DVDs are far cheaper to produce and the printing machinery is a far cheaper and easier conversion for factories.
B) As for space, BluRay has the higher THEORETICAL space (theoretical space has not panned out yetdue to excessive and highly difficult manufacturing problems), but we have yet to see anything over a 50gb disc hit the market or be considered needed. HD DVD ratified the 3layer 51gb disc a couple months ago which seems to negate that argument. Your reason for why Transformers had no lossless? That quote was taken from a single article that was never actually backed up, but spread around the internet anyway. The current thought is that the use of a lossless track was passed because it did not offer any perceptible difference (supported by numerous Hollywood sound technicians saying that DD+ and TrueHD are, on a well mixed track, undifferentiable). Therefore the track was left at DD+ to preserve more bandwidth, etc for bonus features (things that BD is currently incapable of doing like PiP until Profile 1.1 becomes an actual reality) and higher picture quality.
C) If you are going by ticket sales as your chart seems to be showing, the studios seem fairly even to me. I was talking quality of the movies though, not quantity. Ticket sales are a bad judge of quality when things like Wild Hogs can stay at #1 for weeks on end, wouldn't you say? I agree that that is a subjective thing and acknowledged that in my original post. In your exclusive BD studio list you listed subsidiaries of companies as separate entities. You can't do that to boost support numbers..... New Line isn't exclusive to BD, they have HD DVD releases on their schedule. Your Warner Bros comment is unfounded and has been speculated on and off by both camps for a good year now and it has never materialized. I believe Warner probably likes their place as the highest grossing HD media entity due to their support of both formats. And do you really want to count Fox? Being a member and being a consistenly contributing member are 2 different things.
I acknowledged that studio support, give or take, seems a toss up and highly dependent on your tastes.
D) IF, and I'm not willing to go do those PQ and AQ averages, that stat is true, I'm sure it is not a huge margin. No matter though, I would guess that that stems from the fact that most BD movies are more modern releases while HD tends to have a more significant list of back catalog movies. It's harder to get an old master up to modern standards than it is a new one. That says nothing of what websites you are referring to as the top 4 either.
Additionally, most tech-minded people will agree that the difference between 1080i and 1080p is negligible at best as long as your TV (or receiver or projector, etc) has a decent interlacer as most do. Therefore, the current cheapest HD DVD player is about $100 less than the cheapest BD player. This changes once you get into 1080p/24 though, but most people don't have the equipment for this and the players for both formats are much more expensive.
E) You failed to address the significant differences in the adopted standards (or lack thereof for BD) for features on both players and movies. HD DVD is currently a much more solidified entity that you can be sure all players will play all current and future content.... can you say the same for your BD players and the eventual adoption of Profile 2.0 which will eventually bring the feature set on par with HD?
F) Or how about the fact that a decent number of BD "exclusives" are actually distributed by other companies in other countries and are therefore available on HD as imports (since HD has no region encoding which BD does)? There are numerous webistes/companies through which you can get these imports at minimal (eg: $5 or less usually) markup over normal, homegrown discs. Often these imports are available on HD before the "exclusives" are available on BD in the US (eg: Resident Evil series, Mr. Mrs Smith, Bridge to Terabithia, etc).
Look, we could go back and forth on this if you want. I'm willing to accept that both have their pros and cons and I am currently seriously debating picking up a BDP1400 since the price drop (that seems to be a big difference between HD and BD fanboys, HD guys are willing to admit the benefits of BD and are willing to buy in at the right time..... BD fanboys are more like console fanboys and that's not a compliment). I was just correcting an obviously incorrect statement with, at the very least, some moreconsidered commentary. I mean look, that comment came from the same guy that later posted that HD DVD is incapable of doing 1080p (which almost everybody knows it can).... obviously he knows what he's talking about right?
i do, but only because i got the HD-DVD add on, the remote control, the 360 webcam and 15 HD-DVD for $80
there was no way i could pass that deal up
I have the hd-dvd add on and also the ps3 so I have both formats. And I'm waiting on my 5 free hd-dvd movies and 5 free bluray movies by mail. I own the transformers on hd-dvd and that movies looks really good. HD-dvd Is way better then standard dvd. And I got a netflix account and rent both formats.
