I have Charter Cable with a 5mb down and 512k up for $59.99. I was looking at AT&T DSL 6mb down 768k up for $34.99. I heard many people say to stay away from DSL if cable is an option. I do play with people from Europe and Japan with not too much lag. I just dont want to save $25 and end up downgrading. I know that companies can promise all these speeds and end up not delivering.

I figured I would post this in the Xbox 360 forum since I am mainly concerned with how this effects Xbox Live. I like to host matches with as many people as possible. So far I have been able to do ok.

I am not loking to start a war just some personal experiences people have had with both.

Holy **** that gamerscore! Anyway back to topic, yeah I think you should be fine with 5mbps. I have 5.1mbps and I host a lot of ranked matches on Gears and its fine.

DSL should be fine, the lantency is very consistent, even more so then Cable. The only reason people say cable is better is if you get the really expensive 8mbps+ plans, and even then they might not be as good as a slower, but more stable DSL connection. I currently have Embarq(aka: Sprint) and lowest and only DSL service with speeds of 1.5M download/512k upload, and I have not had any problems ever with online gaming but downloaded demos and videos take awhile. I used to have Cox Cable with speeds that were higher but don't remember what they were and I always had trouble with gaming online but the downloading anything was very quick. That is just my experience with both DSL and Cable.

DSL may work just fine depending on the age of the phone lines in your area and the distance between your home and the telephone company's central office.

Cable is gererally more stable due to the relatively young age of the cables and fiber that the cable company uses, and due to the heavy shielding of coaxial cables.

Also, while DSL providers would like to tell you that cable bandwidth is "shared" and DSL bandwidth is "dedicated", what they don't tell you is that beyond your DSL line's "dedicated" bandwidth are backhaul links that are typically WAY oversubscribed.

Short answer: Cable is better.

I have the cheapest option offered by my phone company (like $25 a month) and its fine. It takes a while to download movies, but its rare to get messups in games. But, if you're looking to like download stuff to your computer, play x-box live all while another person is streaming video on their computer connected to the same DSL connection, you're probably gonna get lag.

I use AT&T and while download speeds leave something to be desired, online play on all consoles is just fine. Xbox Live specifically, works great.
