"We're freaking out over here! It is so exciting to share this news with you!

You can now Download the Black Mesa Soundtrack, courtesy of our very own Joel Nielsen, at the very generous price of whatever you want! Enjoy and share!
In the near future you'll see our Website, Wiki and Forums all taken down temporarily for renovations.
On September 14th you will see the first release of Black Mesa! This will include our re-envisioning of Half-Life all the way up to Lambda Core. We believe this is a great way to provide a complete-feeling 8-10 hour experience with a solid ending, make our fans happy and help us make the best overall game possible.

We are still working hard on Xen and BMDM, but instead of making you wait we are giving you Black Mesa as soon as it's ready! We're doing our best to help bring the immense vision of this project into reality, and we are very excited for what the future brings!

High-Fives Yo,
Carlos Montero - Project Leader"

Hmmmm, I wonder how the final product will turn out. This game looked amazing when the orignal release date was 2009, but I imagine it hasn't aged super well over the years...

I wonder why it is taking them so long to get the Xen levels done.

Anyway I'm super excited about this, have been waiting since the mod was first announced and I never lost faith in them.

September turned into quite a month in the last few days with the announcement of Torchlight 2's release and now this :D

Sorry, what is this?

Starshine_M2A2

Black Mesa Project. It's a half life 2 mod that aims to completely remake Half Life 1, in the Source engine.

What I don't understand, is what's the big deal about it, when there's already Half Life: Source.

Dude, Half-Life: Source isn't Half-Life on the source engine. It's Half-Life with some added physics. This Mod is going to be epic, i've been waiting for it long enough.

Oh, is that the difference? Okay. I never actually played Half Life: Source, just kinda figured it was what the name implied. Sounds pretty sweet. I heard they couldn't use original sound files for some reason, and had to make their own new recordings of all the voices. Is that true?

the_bi99man

Half Life Source is just half life ported to the source engine with source water effect, better skyboxes and some (very limited) physics.

Black Mesa on the other hand is a total remake of Half Life with new textures, models, sounds, basically everything.

The reason this mod exists is because a lot of people were dissapointed by HL:S and decided to do a proper remake themselves.

Oh, is that the difference? Okay. I never actually played Half Life: Source, just kinda figured it was what the name implied. Sounds pretty sweet. I heard they couldn't use original sound files for some reason, and had to make their own new recordings of all the voices. Is that true?

It is on the Source engine. It's just translating the entire game from Golden Source Engine to Source Engine. Problem is that it's using all the same assets.

Why couldn't they use it? Was is a file or coding issue? Or was it copyright/legal issue? I imagine Valve would be the least anal about that type of thing.

Maybe the world really will end this year.

I'm not sure. I think valve didn't want them to.

Valve also made the drop the 'source' part of their mod name: Black Mesa Source. Because source is a name they have registered.

But hey, if valve wanted they could have shut down the mod (see WB shutting down a mod on the front page of this board) so I'm not complaining:P

I can't wait to play it, I play Half Life every year so looks like another HL marathon's in order. I'm a little disappointed about no Xen, it's one of my favourite parts of the game, but on the forums the guy says that they're making that into a whole new game of its own and it'll be an expanded version of the old HL Xen area.

Knowing Valve, if the mod is successful they'll just pay/hire the devs then commercialize it (not that that is a completely bad thing, especially if it gets Valve support, Steam distribution/updates, and a relatively low price tag)

Pretty excited!A bit of a shame it's not the complete game, but then the Xen bit always was rubbish.

If it flops... who cares, it's free.

Xen, Gonarch's Lair, Interloper, and Nihilanth weren't that bad. Not the best parts of the game, but still had some decent fun. I was hoping our productiive BM team would have added some flare and changed them up a bit. With everyone always complaining about those missions, nobody would mind if they don't exactly replicate the original. There is over 20% of the game that will be missing at least with this first partial release.

I must be the only one who really liked Xen; very imaginative art work and creative level design made it entertaining just to explore the place and to find out where the aliens came from. It's like Avatar, it's entertaining just to relax and take in the eye candy.

Fact is so many people worked on this mod, it's difficult to decide who did what. Hiring the people that are finishing the mod doesn't necessarily mean Valve will get the most talented ones. If you understand what I mean.

I really hope this launches on steam. Otherwise their servers will crash when this launches. So many people waiting for this for so many years.
