Starting up the season pick'em. I will put up 13-15 games, plus a "game of the week"....every week. It's simple, you don't have to put up the scores and there will be no confidence points. Just simply bold the team you think will win. Each correct answer is worth 1 point, however the "game of the week" is worth 2 points. If your gonna join this, make sure your gonna be here all year long, for the most part at least. I will post the standings every week.

I will allow you to edit your answers until 1 hour before the first game starts, after that you will be disqualified.

I decided to make the game of the week worth only 2 points, since its usually not close when ppl pick. However I will put a different bonus question every week from now on. Bonus questions are worth 1 point.

1. espurs: 163 points
2. gamerforca: 159
3. bobbles : 154 points
4. spfx : 152 points
5. geaux : 149 points
6. sith : 148 points
7. shiro : 144 points
8. steelers: 140 points
9. razman : 139
10.RTJP : 135
11.sfgiantsfan : 131

Saturday, December 6 2008.

To let you guys know games with the "vs" are in neutral fields.

Huh, either no one thinks the Mountaineers can pull off a second huge upset, or everyone is picking LSU for insurance. :( I picked the Tigers for the latter reason, but I believe that App St. can win. :|

I don't, the game won't even be close. Michigan was susceptable to speed and App. St. has speed. LSU has one of, if not, the fastest teams in the nation. Plus they won't be caught off guard.

I agree (especially about the speed match-up) and it is going to be quite some time before App St. surprises anyone. LSU will definitely be ready as they saw the abuse that Michigan took after last year's loss. Don't get me wrong, App St. has a great team but they are not LSU or top 10 caliber.

Understandable viewpoints, my two friends. So, if I may ask this question without getting too far off-topic: using this year's preseason top 25 poll, how many teams in that top 25 do you two think ASU could upset?

Here is the AP Top 25:

AP Top 25
1. Georgia (22) 0-0 1,528
2. Ohio State (21) 0-0 1,506
3. USC (12) 0-0 1,490
4. Oklahoma (4) 0-0 1,444
5. Florida (6) 0-0 1,415
6. Missouri 0-0 1,266
7. LSU 0-0 1,135
8. West Virginia 0-0 1,116
9. Clemson 0-0 1,105
10. Auburn 0-0 968
11. Texas 0-0 966
12. Texas Tech 0-0 786
13. Wisconsin 0-0 771
14. Kansas 0-0 707
15. Arizona State 0-0 631
16. Brigham Young 0-0 590
17. Virginia Tech 0-0 578
18. Tennessee 0-0 509
19. South Florida 0-0 496
20. Illinois 0-0 483
21. Oregon 0-0 366
22. Penn State 0-0 293
23. Wake Forest 0-0 227
24. Alabama 0-0 89
25. Pittsburgh 0-0 85

I would say that ASU would do well against #11 (Texas) on down... :) (just kidding Espurs)

To be honest I really don't know the answer, though I would be much less surprised if ASU beat a BYU, South Florida or Illinois then if they beat an LSU, Auburn or Texas. So I guess I could see them upsetting the bottom 10 teams or so in this list though they probably wouldn't be favored in many of those games (which is why they call it an upset :) ).

Also maybe Wake Forest and Alabama.

Due to the postponement of the Arkansas @ Texas game, it can't be used this week in Pick'em. Before anyone asks, No there won't be a replacement game to pick in place of that game.

There was some discussion on other threads as to USC jumping into the top spot, so far I see only one person has pick OSU to beat USC. Enough said.

Dude, they may both look the same to someone on the left coast but please be assured that the Big Ten != SEC. If it was USC vs. Georgia I think you may have seen something very different...

Just to follow-up on my on post, I really didn't have a problem with USC moving up to the top spot. As a fan, I want to see the BCS teams play other schools in BCS conferences and I think that you should be rewarded when you do this (if you win). I really don't like the way that college football has gone the past 20 years where teams often schedule 0 or 1 quality out-of-conference opponents and cry that it is because their conference is sooo hard. This is rampant and OU is as guilty of it as everyone else. So I like it when the voters give a team more credit for playing these games (I know Virginia wasn't the top of the ACC but they are better than most of the schools that the other top 25 teams played).

In the old days you got 11 games to impress the voters and quality out-of-conference wins was a big part of it. Now it seems like everyone plays it as safe as possible to avoid losses so that they can get to the end of the season and try to get into the top 2 slots.

I would really like to see a playoff someday but I am afraid that if it happened that there would be absolutely no reason to play any quality out of conference games. Again everyone would try to end up in the top 4 or top 8 (depending on the size of the playoff) and they would much rather have wins over weak opponents than risk having another loss.

(climbs down off soap-box) :)

What in the hell does us picking USC over OSU have to do with still thinking USC isn't the top team in the country, at the moment?

Too me it has nothing to do with what coast I am on. When it comes to sports I like to think I respect good teams no matter where they are from. USC might be in my backyard, but I believe I have stated how much I do not like USC (or UCLA). I have said (maybe not here) that I think that the Big 10 has been overrated the last couple of years. I think there are good teams in the SEC, but they have their cellar teams also (I just hate SEC fans who say there aren't any). I don't like when teams get rewarded for playing poor OOC opponents (I see it in college baseball all the time and it just annoys me a lot). As you said in a later comment, I too hate the scapegoat about "Our conference is tough. We need easier OOC opponents  " If you beat 3 weak OOC opponents and took you conference, what does that prove?

#1 - I agree with most of what you just said.

#2 - This is a totally different argument than you initially made about everyone picking USC over OSU. You implied that this should have validated USC being #1 over Georgia which isn't a very logical argument.

#3 -I was joking about the left coast. I know you are not a Pac-10 guy.

#4 - Unfortunately we have an imperfect system and schools take advantage of this to try to maximize the odds of them finishing on top. There will always be an argument over who should be #1 - the team that is "stronger" (i.e. the one that the majority of people think would win if 2 teams played heads up) or the team that has played the best on the field (which includes beating stronger competition). Note that these are often not the same. I tend to favor the latter whereas most people choose the former. This argument gets even more divisive when the "stronger" team happens to lose a game and people still argue that it was a fluke and they should still be top ranked as they are still "obviously" the best team.

#5 - Time to move on. It is what it is. :)

Yep, I feel your pain. The only good thing is that it wasn't the game of the week... :)

True, true. However, every missed prediction hurts. Oh well, I didn't expect to do too well in my first time doing this anyway. :|

Pretty much everyone picked Michigan and Cal to win. Where is Terps anyways? He probably would have been the only person to have picked Maryland it seems.

I highlighted ND, and then changed it to the Wolverines right before I clicked the orange "submit" button to submit my picks. Hunches, gotta love 'em. :(
