In some of my other unions, I like to give little quizes, as they can be quite informative.  Pretty self-explanatory; answer a question, then ask one of your own (mostly, these relate to the union theme).

Q: The character who gives the first belmont their whip is a

A. a priest

B. a diety named fate

C. a shopkeeper

D. a dying vampire hunter

C. a shopkeeper

So do I wait to confirm a correct answer or do I ask my question?

Well, in the off chance that my answer is incorrect, then just ignore my question.

Which of these songs was not present in the original Castlevania for NES?

Sure you got to use one of his lungs. In Castlevania Dracula X-2 when you do the XTREME helicopter jump into the volcano you had to get Dracula's lung to use as a parachute for Alucard so he could do tricks and get enough points to make it into the next stage.

Yes. . . that is right.  Dracula X-2 was one of my favorite points in the series. . .  I mean who didn't like the lung.

>_>

Why can't IGA bring back some of this extreme Castlevania stuff?

We need to be able to use Dracula's hamstring as a sling shot.  Dracula's intestines to could be the XTREME WHIP OF DEATH.  It would be 26 feet of insane dark power.  Perhaps it would be stronger than the Vampire Killer. . .  Oh yes, it would rock.

So, did anyone rescue all the children in Legacy of Darkness?  I hope no one left any of them stranded there. . .

B. Archemedies
I believe he was an ancient Greek mathematician, while the rest belonged to the Greek pantheon of gods.

And the reason I didn't post a new question was that I was waiting on confirmation of my answer, as I wasn't completely certain I was correct.  I'll be waiting on this one as well, even though I'm a lot more certain this time.

You are correct.  Apollo's card created explosives, depending on which element card you used it with.  Venus could boost different character stats.  I liked Diana's card, as it created projectiles from your whip.  (I think my favorite card is still the whip modifier, Mercury).  Perhaps an Archimedes card could have done a FFVII style math attack, in various elements?

All right, I feel another Legacy of Darkness question coming, brace yourself...

Which of the following is not a name of one of the towers in Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness?

A. Tower of Ruin
B. Art Tower
C. Tower of Execution
D. Duel Tower
E. Tower of Witchcraft
F. Tower of Science

(venus, you still need to ask a question, too.  I suppose I just felt compelled to butt in and ask this one).

Waiting for confirmation on that... but I'll post a question anyway

Yeah, that's correct. I was hoping to get someone with Ralph, as that was Trevor's name in the Japanese version of Castlevania III and Curse of Darkness. Unfortunately, I have no answer on your quiz :(

Yeah I figured that was a ploy for someone, I knew about Ralph from Castlevania III, but I didn't know about it from Curse of Darkness (not sure where it falls in the time line, I haven't played it) so there's some more Castlevania info for me to store away.

B. Beryl Circlet

Twas very useful in that it allowed Alucard to absorb Lightning damage. Galamoth used a lightning storm attack that would hit for crazy damage without this item. And now, for another Symphony question...

The Alucart equipment, while rather useless individually, gave a significant boost to a particular stat should Alucard equip them all.  Which stat was this?
A. STR
B. CON
C. INT
D. LCK

Sorry it has taken so long for me to respond, but I had a very busy weekend. So for lack of a more prepared and better question...

What author's work inspired the beast Anfauglir (Warg from the American translation) in SotN?

  1. A - R. A. Salvator
  2. B - C. S. Lewis
  3. C - J. R. R. Tolkien

I believe the answer is C - J.R.R. Tolkien.  There are lots of influences from Tolkien's works in the Castlevania games.  Particularly, the Silmarillion by Tolkien.  I haven't read it yet, but it sits on my bookshelf waiting to be read.

It is a definite fact that the Japanese love to put literary references into their games.  Some of these references are clever and hard to catch, some are blatant and obvious.  They are all very interesting because it connects the game outside influences.  Literature, mythology, different ideologies from all over the world.  I think few games do it as good as the Castlevanias.  So many of the weapons and creatures are drawn from external influences.

I think this is particularly interesting because weapons are such an important aspect to epic literature.  In epic poetry, the weapons are often portrayed as characters.  They have personalities and often have special circumstances under which they are used.  All this has me thinking of a question...

The Balmung, as seen in Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow, is...

A - A sword Beowulf attempts to slay Grendal's Mother with in Beowulf.
B - An unbreakable sword used by Roland in The Song of Roland.
C - Attributed to Odin, used by heroes like Siegfried in The Nibelungenlied.
D - A cursed sword that can not be sheathed until blood has been spilled upon it.

Right you are, Anfauglir is the Elvish name of Carcharoth, the guardian wolf from the Silmarillion. I have read a lot of it, but need to reread it. You really need to to have time to invest into it, you can miss a lot of little things that make a big difference.

As for your question I believe the answer is

C - Attributed to Odin, used by heroes like Siegfried in The Nibelungenlied.

Waiting for confirmation though.

Excellent, you are correct.

Beowulf used the sword called Hrunting, lent to him by Unferth.  Roland's sword was named Durandal.  The cursed sword I describe is actually pretty ambiguous, as there were many famous "blood thirsty swords".  These include swords like the Tyrfing or Dainsleif.  All of these swords have appeared in a Castlevania game.  The idea of a blood thirsty sword seems to be most accurately depicted in the Muramasa in Symphony of the Night, while it isn't exactly an accurate representation of what we believe Muramasa blades to be.

The Balmung is often attributed to Odin to begin with, though he is often more famous for his spear and horse.  The Nibelungenlied, also called TheRing of the Nibelungs, is one of my favorite pieces of German epic poetry.  The Balmung is used by Siegfried, one of that epic's heroes.  The sword is stolen from him by one of the antagonists, Hagen.  Kriemhild, Siegfried's love, uses Balmung to slay Hagen later in the epic.  In this respect, the Balmung embodies revenge.

While many scholars can't agree, it seems there is a duality in the existence of the Balmung.  As the various stories were passed down, it seems that some people started to call it by another name.  This name is definitely one any player of Castlevania will recognize... the Balmung, to different people, can also be called Gram.

I didn't know the Balmung was also refered to as Gram, but now I do and that will be the example for my question...

Which 2 items have no relation in their actual sources?

  1. Gram & Balmung
  2. Dark Blade & Luminus
  3. Mormegil & Gurthang
  4. Rahab & Laevatain

#1 is really just an example, Gram and Balmung are 2 different names for the same sword given to Siegfried by Odin. Sorry if the question is confusing.

That is a great question, jacobs1282.  Really good.

Well, you told us #1 was connected (which it is, you're right :P ).  I read the Hobbit in my Freshman year of high school, and I'm almost 100% sure that the Dark Blade and Luminus are both swords from it.  So #2 is out in my guess.  Mormegil and Gurthang sound very Tolkien-ish to me.  I didn't remember them from any of the books I read, so I checked the Silmarillion.  Thank goodness it has a glossary in the back.  While the description isn't completely clear to me, it might be if I read the book, but it seems they are connected.

So that leaves #4.  I'm going to guess that Rahab and Laevatain are the ones with no relation in their sources.  Laevatain looks like a Germanic word and Rahab looks like an Indian or middle-eastern word.  Perhaps you can give more information on all of these jacobs, I'm very interested in learning more about them.

Ah right you are. Obviously #1 is out we've been over that. #2 is also out, as you said they are indeed both from the Hobbit. They are the 2 swords found in the cave when the group was taken prisoner through the crack in the wal... or was it when the trolls captured them? Anyway they're from the Hobbit. The Dark Blade or Glamdring as it is better known was claimed by Gandalf and the Luminus or Orcrist as it is better known was claimed by the dwarf Thorin.

#3 is out as you said they are both from the Silmarillion. Gurthang is the name of a sword that was forged from another sword and wielded in battle by Turi'n which helped earn him the name Mormegil from his enemies meaning Black Sword.

This only leaves us with #4 Rahab and Laevatain. Laevatain was a magic wand formed by Loki which he intended to use at Ragnarok to kill the roster Vithofnir to prevent it from warning of their approach. For more information check here. Rahab is the name of a water demon in Jewish folklore. For more information check here.

Well there you have it, good call Rockman

Alucard1137, please make sure that your posts are meaningful to the topic.

Well, I guess I'll ask another question to get this bumped back up.

Agnea can be obtained in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence by:

A) Combining the Knife and the Black Orb.
B) Combining the Cross and the White Orb.
C) Combining the Holy Water and the Blue Orb.
D) Begging Rinaldo for it.

It's been almost a week so I say that alucard1137 forfeits his turn. Therefore, I shall ask.

According to legend, Medusa was a monster that turned people to stone. Yet the Medusa heads that have been around since the original Castlevania did nothing but knock the player off platforms. This changed in Symphony of the Night with the addition of an alternate color Medusa head that actually DID turn the player to stone. The question is, what color was it?

A. Blue
B. Red
C. Purple
D. Gold
E. Silver

a. They are boyfriend/girlfriend
b. They despise each other, and Juste is only helping because of Maxim's request
c. They are close childhood friends
d. They are married

I'm saying C. They are close childhood friends. Waiting on confirmation, thought I'm 99% sure I'm right.
