Not asking for the worst sequels of all time. Hell, the games dont even have to be bad. Just list 3 sequels (or more if you like) that really left you feeling down about a series.

Mine.

1. MGS4

2. FFXIII

3. Mario 64

I know I'll get hate for that last one. :P

I dont think its a bad game at all, but I hated seeing Mario go 3d after amazing titles like SMB3, SMW and Yoshis Island. Everyone else loved it, but to me it was the end of Mario as I knew it.

  1. Reach
  2. Skyrim
  3. Ruby/Sapphire

After Reach, I I've turned into a cynic. Now I expect the worst, and hope the game is decent, but before that I coundn't contain my excitement for upcoming games.

I miss that.

Dude, I can totally relate to that. 1. Ninja Gaiden 3 - both the newest one and the nes one. 2. Zelda 2 - wtf were they thinking? At least they returned to form after that. 3. FFVIII - I actually enjoyed the game. Much more than XIII thats for sure. But it was the first FF game that left me feeling unimpressed. and what the hell 4. Castlevania - whichever ones were on the N64. Felt like a knife to the heart.

I wanted a 360 solely because I had just played Halo 1 on PC (never had an Xbox) and it was one of the best games I had ever played. Halo 2 - wasn't.

You've never been disappointedwith a sequel? Not once? Lucky you.

Its not always just easy to make sure a game is worth it. You never know for sure until you play it yourself. A game can come from a stellar series, have tons of glowing reviews and even good word of mouth from other gamers and still end up disappointing.

[QUOTE="Tony-Baxter"] Mario 64 was pure ownage!!

Yeah, I know I have the odd ball opinion on this one. I think I was 14 when it came out and everyone in my highschool was going ape-sh*t about how awesome it was. I enjoyed it too, but it just wasnt as fun as the previous titles to me. I saw Mario 64 as the end of an era. I didnt fully appreciate 3d games until OoT came out.

Tekken 4 (PlayStation 2) Twisted Metal 3 (PlayStation) Numerous '64' versions of games compared to their previous 16-bit entries. At least later GameCube sequels made up for them. :)

There might be some sequels that weren't as good as their predecessors, but my expectations weren't high enough to call them a disappointment. The only sequel i wasn't too happy about, as i remember, was Super Paper Mario, but when i actually played it it wasn't half bad.

1. Playstation 3 - ps2 was the greatest system ever, I was expecting the sequel to be better or at least as good. 2. Grand theft auto 5 - once I got over the shock value of what the were able to accomplish with the technology, I realized the game wasn't very fun. 3. Mass effect 3 - I loved this game, the ending didn't bother me. My one gripe is the mandatory multiplayer to get your galactic readiness up for the single player mode. I'm not a huge fan of online multiplayer for most games anyway so when I buy what I think s a single player game and I'm forced to engage in multiplayer to enhance the single player experience, it feels like work instead of fun.

Fair enough. I guess if you keep your expectations low enough you can avoid feeling let down. I've gotten better at that in recent years. I had to since most of my favorite series went down hill so quickly. I finally learned that no dev, or series is infallible even if they put out pure gold for 20 years straight. Eventually something will go bad.

You were dissapointed with MGS4? :( I thought it was an amazing game personally.

Anyway;

1. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 - Just dissapointing in every aspect compared to CoDMW1.

2. Anything after Halo 3 - Played Halo 3 to death...loved both 1, 2, and 3. Have been nothing but dissapointed with every Halo since. Although I admittedly have not had the chance to pick up Halo 4 yet so maybe that'll change.

3. Fable 3 - Wtf happened here? First 2 were fun IMO. 3 was just...meh. Though I did still enjoy it but very dissapointing overall.

Puckhog04

Yeah, but I'd rather not get into it. My complaints are all encompassing (plot, characterization, writing, retcons, gameplay mechanics, level design, enemy ai, game design fundamentals, controls, etc..) it gets a bit long winded. I had an unhealthy obsession with the series to say the least. If I took all my posts that are scattered across the net regarding MGS4, I could literally edit them into a book.

But yes, I was VERY disappointed. I've never been so shocked at a sequel in my life. Its actually a good thing though, I was way too invested in MGS. Far too much of my time and money went towards it. Now I dont really care anymore.

1. Oblivion- what an awful character creation and the dialogue system was a turn off. The only saving grace that game had was Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean.

2. MGS2- first 20 min of the game = :), everything after the boat part =:|

3. WoW MoP- It wasn't as bad as Cata, but it certainly is not as good as vanilla and BC WoW.

1. Crackdown 2

Crackdown was a fun game and all but it left a lot to be desired. It was a bit clunky, it looked barely above PS2 standards(if even) and since it's release alot of new game concepts had come around so there were alot of obvious way that a sequel could improve. Instead we got essentially the same exact game but with zombies in it. Really. Same map, same game engine, same exact gameplay. And we waited over three years for this. It might not be a terrible game but it might as well be a crime that they didn't try at all with this.

2. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire

They did the oposite of what a sequel should do here, they took out more features than they added, and coming right after Gold and Silver which were arguably the best games in the franchise and added more features than any other other installment in the series then it's really hard to get past how stupid Ruby and Sapphire were. And the designs for Pokemon at this point on were weak.

3. Final Fantasy XIII

The premiere jrpg series becomes a side show with a combat system that practically plays itself, a tutorial that doesn't end until the thirty hour mark and the worst cast in the series. This game was so lame that I learned to appreciate the freedom XII gave you, it's unique artistic vision from the rest of the series and the partially talented voice cast.

Runner up goes to every Lumines game after Lumines II(mnd you, I haven't played the new one on Vita) and Gears of War 2

Fight Night Round 4 since they got rid of Total Punch Control, and they canned EA Chicago, oh well I don't need to buy another Fight Night game I'll just keep playing FNR3 when I'm in the mood, hell I played the old Blitz and Hitz games for the last decade and still do I think I can hold out in protest. Battlefield Bad Company 2, while I love this game for the MP I was let down by the SP which was much better in the first BFBC, and considering the game has a squad of 4 it was such a missed opportunity to include a 4 player online co-op campaign, plus the game lacked the humorous charm of the first game, and the squad didn't have that lovable underdog band a misfits thing going for it since the squad seemed less like a disciplinary unit and more like a reliable save the world spec ops team. Modern Warfare 3, I haven't really liked the COD/MW games for the MP and strictly just got them for the SP, loved MW2 SP and was looking forward to WW3 continuing but man did they really mess this game up, it's like they took us to locations in the SP just to justify its presence in the MP and man did they blow that SP, this game really made it easy to decide just to ignore everything COD/MW/Blops from then on. God of War 3, I personally loved the first two games with God of War 2 being my favorite, but to me God of War 3 was a huge letdown, sure the game looked great and undoubtedly the best looking God of War game to date, but I wanted this for the gameplay, which I felt was lacking. The boss fights were boring, they weren't the spectacle that they were in God of War 2, and like any beat em up the meat of it is in the challenging filler combat along the way, something this game severely lacked, taking away from what was already a relatively short campaign.
