Now, I realise there is a similar thread in System wars, but I don't believe there is one that is actually asking a question so much as it is making a statement. My question to you concerns how you felt about GTA IV initially, and how you feel about it now that the expansion packs have been released. Do you hope that future Rockstar titles will share a similar vibe, or would you prefer them to stick to their roots?

It's really the GTA III of this gen. That's how I view it. Brand new engine, throws all the essential stuff in and it's a starting point. You can see they're improving the engine a lot in the episodes with the blurryness gone and adding in all kinds of cool stuff. It's a good game overall.

I loved GTA4..but on the next one I think they should make a larger map...and keep making expansions too because I always love continuous stories of games to keep it fresh

I was disappointed by GTAIV. A lot of things that made the series so great was taken out. Missions were repetitive and dull and the story was nothing special either.

I did enjoy playing multiplayer with my friends though. I thought that was the real highlight of GTAIV.

With that said, I'm looking forward to playing the second expansion, BoGT thanks to the reintroduction of parachutes, something that I've always yearned in GTAIV.

Maybe GTA V will make it all good again :) Then again I was never a fan of the GTA series.

GTA IV = Really awesome game. TLAD = Great. TBOGT = Takes everything that is awesome in GTA IV and makes it even much better.

Despite never being a fan of the series I thought GTA 4 was great. However, considering how much room for improvement there was, (as proven by both its predecessors and the dlc's) the critics overrated it. I haven't played the dlc's yet, but I'm gonna pick up EfLC soon. Looks good.

Interesting viewpoint - it certainly is an encouraging way of looking at it.

Haven't played the episodes, but the original gave me the kind of fun that I hadn't experienced in years. Aside from the exquisite detail put into Liberty City, the game vastly improves on all of the series' core mechanics, bringing a more interactive experience in that regard. Even though there wasn't as much content as San Andreas (in SA's case several of the features in the game were awful), there was a lot to do in the game aside from the story missions. The story was better than the previous games by a mile, and Niko is easily the best main character in a GTA game. On top of that, a very diverse and great soundtrack, and a beautiful visual design. I understand if the realistic shift towards the series upset some fans. But personally I wanted this since SA.

Ever played gta San Andreas? -better and bigger map with more cities -more vehicles and weapons -better story with much better missions and not so repettive missions -much better characters, all characters in gta iv are terrible. Seriously, i was kept on thinking, why would i care about that serbian character and his story and why would i care about the other characters? ...and this average free roam game gets a 10?

I love GTAIV, its definitely second best in the series (after Vice City). The Lost and Damned is OK, Ballad of Gay Tony is much better.

Got bored of GTA4 after a few days, might pick up BoGT, but i guess i just dont enjoy the GTAs anymore to warrant sinking more money into it. Vice City was the last one i played for more than a few days and mostly because of the atmosphere, setting, and soundtrack.

The story in San Andreas isn't even coherent when you compare it to GTAIV's.The tone and atmosphere is just all over the place. I mean, how did it start out as a story about the ghetto and turn into some high-jinx Area 51 kind of thing? How does that even narratively make sense?

GTAIV's story is completely consistent thematically, atmospherically and in tone. It makes San Andreas's story look completely cheesy and sloppy. I'm not saying that SA had a terrible story (it had heart after all), but it was nothing compared to GTAIV's. San Andreas did some things better, but how someone can say the story is one of them is beyond me.

my opinion on GTAIV: the game is a piece of art. And the shooting, driving and detail make it hard to go back to the PS2 iteration. The game has a grace to it that the others lack.

It was meh. I didint get an uber good impression from it. Thats why I sold it a couple months after I beat it. It was just sitting there. I still like vice city more espcially in the soundtrack department.

it may have had it's share of problems but gta 4 was hyped into the stratosphere so no suprise people wanted to gripe afterwards, it's almost impossible to live up to the kind of hype gta4 had.

next up i'd really like to see 70's las vegas or a return to the 80's vice city

A piece of repettive art and with some serious lack of content, whatever the case may be, atleast SA had some diffrent story at its parts instead of keep in on the serbian dude with bad ascesnt and immigrant alliance against the liberty city criminals.

The story is the only not sad one so you probably wont like it as much a gta4's. But with that being said I find it a far more cohesive experience then the main game.

I just don't care for the GTA series. It bores me too easily. I've never had an urge to do anything in the GTA games beyond rampaging across the city. The writing and characters (from the trailers, reviews, etc) that I have seen for GTA4 and the episodes just irk me for some reason. It's like they were trying to make realistic and funny characters but they all just annoy the crap out of me.

I don't much care for the original, my review states some reasons why. TBOGT is pretty enjoyable so far due to a variety of different missions and there seems to be a lot more to do, I'm liking it so far.

My biggest gripe with these games is they are poorly written. The characters are underwritten and very overacted, and what makes it worse is that most are just plain uninteresting. They need to cut many of them out and focus on the development of fewer to give them more depth. The dialouge needs to be tamed down and focued more as well. All the characters ramble on about irrelevant garbage until they finally get to the point in the last 30 seconds. I really don't even bother listening to most conversations at all, they just seem to be talking just to talk and to set the tone for the game instead of pertaining to anything actually useful. It gets dull and redundant. The car physics and phone still grate on my nerves but they don't seem as bad this time.

Taking it in the direction they have, they need to hire a professional writer to help flesh out and create better characters. Other than these things, it's a cool game.

The game looks great and is a lot of fun to play...to a point. I haven't played it much further than the "Snow Storm" mission, due to an ever increasing sense of impending boredom. The missions started to feel repetitive and I began to wonder if that's all there was to the game. I haven't bothered finding out.

I haven't tried the add-ons, as they aren't available for pc.

Its good but the missions are very repetitive, and once you beat the game their isn't much to do besides screw around with the stuff. It gets boring after an hour or two thoe.

I absolutely love the new one. The immersion is incredible. But I really wish Rockstar, as a company, didn't alienate their Sony customers by releasing a 20 hour DLC's exclusive on the 360 this gen. Total BS if you ask me, considering the momentum gained by Rockstar after GTA3 debuted on would not have been possible without the PS2.

I really was a major GTA fan, and put more hours into GTA SA than any other game I have ever played. That being said I found GTA 4 to be very boring. I actually had to force myself to play for the 6 out of 7 hours (had to go on rampage:P) I played it. The last one I payed to the point where I had callouses on my thumbs, and with 4 I had to force myself to play. It was significantly better looking though .

I was disappointed in it. I got bored pretty quick. San Andreas was much better in my opinion. The expansions have me curious again though. I'm considering trying out BOGT after seeing the reviews its getting, but then again, GTAIV got a 10 and I still found it disappointing so maybe not.

Im not a fan of the GTA series, but I will say that GTA lV was a good game. It was fun, and what made it a complete win for me was the time where I was driving around, and then 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins came on through the radio. Epic music win indeed. :P

GTA4 started amazing. However, after the first island, the game went downhill. It's as if their budget for the story ran out.
