Xbox Game Pass Subscriptions Reach 30 Million, Take-Two CEO Says

During TheWrap's digital event, TheGrill 2021, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that Xbox Game Pass subscribers have reached the 30 million mark. This comment was made during aroundtable discussionthat included Xbox executive Phil Spencer. Link

Well this is interesting. The growth of the service seems to be still progressing. That is more than half of the Xbox One userbase and nearly 10 times more than PSNow.😮

Not surprising, it is a fantastic value and just keeps getting better. I’m definitely enjoying it myself.

That's a growth of 7 million in last 5 months. These are the kind of metrics I imagine MS is thinking about with regard to their titles being on Game Pass.

Odd to see Take-Two actually commenting something nice about GP growth while a month ago Take-Two doesn't like GP for putting newer games on it just seems as if they are taking a liking all of a sudden.

Either way, glad GP is making a strive in the gaming world.

Gamepass is cool.

So GamePass is already far ahead of MY (and no doubt their own) projection miletone of 30 million subscribers by January 2022.

This needs to be burned into the mind of anyone who believes GamePass is "unsustainable". In 3 years, GamePass will be a service that "prints" $10 Billion+ dollars annually.

At this late stage of the game, is there anyone left who still believes Microsoft is pressed about $7.5 Billion, or a couple hundred million they'll lose on Elder Scrolls/Starfield not being on PlayStation?

If 10 million people bought Elder Scrolls on Playstation (higher than any bethesda game has sold on PlayStation, but not Xbox) Microsoft gets $490 Million dollars. Once.

If those same 10 million become GamePass subscribers, they get $1.8 Billion annually ($15 x 12 x 10,000,000). Microsoft is playing a much longer game than Sony.

Will be interesting to see what the shift will be like through the holiday season with Halo and Forza releasing.

@StrongDeadlift: Gamepass is sustainable if you have a lot of subscribers( it will be the new normal in gaming just like TV today)and problem is keeping those subscribers and that’s were quantity over quantity comes in question, I have to many questions that need answers to understand game subscription services better.

GamePass is the best thing to happen to gaming.

Own an xbox, 360, and XBone never once tried gamepass i can't be alone f gamepass and ill never use it or buy it as an xbox owner.

I can't see myself ever not having it now that I do. Since I purchased the new systems, the first game I purchased since launch Deluxe Spidey will be Disco Elysium on the Switch, all thanks to Game Pass.

they are dumb...GP is great as a marketing tool to push sales in their new games by releasing their older games on gamepass.

Zelnick continued to talk about interactive media and how subscription services need to offer content consumers want. He then asked Spencer, "I think last time we checked, we got around 30 million subs, Phil, right? Something like that?"

However, Spencer responded, "The last public number we announced was 18 [million]." Zelnick then appeared to try to course-correct himself, saying, "It's more than 18."

Spencer was covering the CEOs behind, as he would've certainly heard an earful from investors if not told first in an investor's call.

That said, as you can see in the transcript, Spencer and T2 CEO clearly talked about it off air.

I wouldn’t expect anything else coming from you.

Considering he's not a Microsoft executive, and therefore would not know these numbers for real, I'd take this with a grain of salt.

But if true, then Microsoft is still on track to achieve the scaling required to make the Game Pass model work.

Considering Take Two has had numerous games go to the Game Pass service I would assume they'd have to know where the userbase sits in negotiation compensation and determining a window for those games to be on it. And I would assume that information would be privileged to those who need to know, they're just not supposed to go tell the world.

After Phil Spencer says the announced number is 18, Strauss says "for some reason I thought it was <garbled>". Strauss then says it is more than 18 assuming it had increased since the last public announcement.

Seems clear Strauss simply doesn't know regardless.

Devs with their games on GP used to make like $1 instead of $60. Now they're making $2.30.

What Phil Spencer was saying, was that he's not prepared to publicly confirm anything, not that it wasn't true.

Publishers, in this case Take Two's CEO (and developers) have access to detailed up to the minute sales performance data, so they can know how to position their products or if it's worth using the service for certain products. They don't get their information via twitter like the fans do. They probably have incredibly detailed data sheets which even has Gamepass average user behaviour region by region. They need it for the business side of things.

I know that you'll ignore this though because you're a pretty hardcore PS fan.

Yeah... To assume that pubs/devs don't have access to basic information when deciding to invest with a platform is pure nonsense. It's due diligence for a business investing elsewhere.
