Hardware wise - Xbox 360 had RROD problems which were rampant in the beginning. PS3 was much more reliable. 360 had the best version of multiplats. PS3 had wireless/lithium controllers and a Blu-Ray drive.

Game Library - 360 was pretty much a shooter console. PS3 had more artsy games and JRPG support. PS3 also has MGS 4, which today, still remains exclusive. Sony also has more first party developers.

Network/Online - 360 was truly innovative in this space, but you had to pay for online. Sony clearly lacked behind in the beginning, but also made ground with PS+ later on.

Overall, Sony is my winner. The hardware features were better and I also like Sony games as well as MGS 4.

What about you, SW?

PS3. It had a shit start, but in the end it was my favorite console of the gen by a good margin. Nice hardware, my favorite library of the big 3 and free online. Having the fully BC version was an awesome bonus as well.

I bought the system for 3 games, two of which ended up being garbage and the 3rd game never released. Luckily it made up for those losses and then some.

Edit: I have to say, the 360 had every bit as much variety as the PS3 man. Shooter console? The 360? I'm pretty sure Sony focused on shooters more than MS last gen. The original Xbox was a shooter heavy console, but they've been good about variety ever since.

PS3. It's horrendous to use when it comes to its UI, it has lots of flaws the 360 covered a long time ago, and it never lived up to the price I paid for it, but I know I'm happier with it than any other system I've owned.

I had a PS3 for much longer than my 360 and therefore played it much more, but in the end it didn't really matter. The exclusive lineup on both weren't to my liking for the most part so they essentially shared everything. However the 360 had far superior online. At least it did for Street Fighter IV which is the only game I ever played consistently online last gen. Trying to play that game on PSN was an absolute fool's errand.

PS3 did have better exclusives though with the inFAMOUS games, The Last of Us, and 3D Dot game heroes as few as they were. On the other side, 360 had Bayonettawhich was almost unplayable on PS3.

Ultimately the difference was negligeable for me so I can't really give an answer.

Xbox 360, given that I played a lot of games with friends the party chat features made gaming with friends a lot more enjoyable for me, whereas the lack of it on PS3 made gaming with friends rather frustrating.

There's no doubt. PS3 has a wide variety of games of all genres, while the Xbox360 had 20 games in 8 years which were all basically an expansion of the same game. The PS3 is vastly superior.

360 pretty much dominated last gen. its impact on the industry was way more significant than the ps3's. it legitimized indies, expanded the media features of consoles, revolutionized online gaming on consoles, helped make controller support on most pc multiplats the standard, had a much better library of games than the ps3 and you didn't have to wait years for multiplats, party chat and more. what did the ps3 do? umm...blu ray?

I find it hilarious people call the 360 the shooter console when the PS3 had a larger number of FPS exclusives. lol Not to meniton 360 had a ton of games without any shooting like PGR, Forza, Kameo, Trials, Geometry Wars, and so on.

360 - hardware, library, controller and online service

PS3 - exclusives, reability and bluray

Overall 360 was a better gaming console.

They're both best at what they do.

PS3 - Best at playing video games.

360 - Best at playing Minecraft with children.

Honestly, the 360... I'm not taking anything away from the ps3's comeback or late gen quality, but the 360 was the iconic HD console with better multiplats and on pay exclusives...

Also, the dualshock 3 IS to this day still the worst controller I've possibly ever used, compounded by the fact that the 360 controller may be the best.... To some that means little, to me it's a huge deal breaker... I don't dislike the dualshock 3, I effing hate it.

PS3, much more varied library. They took a lot of punts on interesting exclusives and i don't think we'll see that happen again sadly,

The 360 was nice if you enjoy Halo, Gears and Forza.

Even though the XBOX 360 had more powerful hardware, due to its shared pool of memory and its beefier graphics chip, the PlayStation 3 was the better of the two machines. Sony's console had the benefit of superior and more numerous first party titles, as well as support that lasted its entire stretch (whereas Microsoft had only a few exclusive IPs, which disappeared about halfway into their machine's lifetime). To top things off, the PS3 was constructed with better quality and subsequently had a much lower rate of failure than the XBOX 360...and it had BluRayHiDef!

hardware wise no one really nailed it last gen.

the 360, on paper, had the best hardware. not necessarily the most powerful but it was the most developer friendly and MS made good calls on the design. the PS3 may have had higher peak numbers in benchmarks but any real world difference was negligable and the cost of such awkward hardware (many games looking worse then theur 360 counterpart) just was not worth it.

but the 360 was loud and incredibly unreliable (the PS3 also had its problems, especially the first model with YLOD). its completely unacceptable to release a console in that state.

games wise:

if i could only have one gaming console last gen and wasnt alowed to have a PC then the 360 would be my choice. better multiplats and some decent exclusives. but the 360 was my least played console last gen. played some gears (1 and 2 were ok but lost interest after that), forza (good fun) and halo (3 was meh and ODST was awful) and that was about it games wise and that was about it for me on the 360.

so in the real world, if i had to choose between one or the other then it would be the PS3.

Both sucked, in fact last gens consoles were probably the worst consoles to ever be released with the 360's RROD issue, PS3's over priced blu ray with piss poor multiplat support and the Wii's biggest fad in gaming history.

PS3. The only thing bad about it was the early fat versions were prone to overheating. I lost the one that could play ps2 games because of it :(

Is this current gen really that bad and boring that we have to go back to the past and talk about things we've already discussed and debated millions of times last gen?

360 by far. My trusty old Elite 360 still works to this day.

90% of my multiplatform games are on it. Better online infrastructure. 3rd party games run better on it. I prefer the controller. I prefer the exclusives on it....ones that actually have replayability and are fun to play.

1) The PS3 was NOT much more reliable it had issues with YLoD, as well as other issues. YLoD was a significantly less of an issue than RRoD but none the less was still an issue for many people. To be honest, the Wii was the only reliable console last generation - if you really have to go there.

2) The 360 games library is just as diverse (minus a couple of JRPG's) as the PS3's plus it has more games overall due to a year long head start.

3) XBL is better than PSN and will always be due to Azure and 300K worldwide servers more bandwidth = less lag. XBL also has far better matchmaking and is irrefutably more stable than PSN.

PS3 easily wins. Best game library 3 gens in a row.

And the 360 fanboys are still sticking with the myth that the PS3 had no games in it's first 2 years which is BS. The PS3 had an awesome first and second year with tons of quality games. You people are just being ignorant.

The only advantages PS3 had were 1) free online and 2) some very late generation exclusive gems.

Aside from that, the 360 was the winner of the gen by far in terms of everything else. Especially multiplatform titles.

And lol @ calling out the 360 on hardware issues... almost all 20, 40 and 60 GB fat PS3's are doomed to failure due to a design flaw that can only be fixed by opening the thing up and doing some internal work.

Err. no not at all, for starters the 360 had way more WRPG's than the PS3 like witcher 2, gothic 4, Risen, Ego draconis and it also had games in Genres that where not available on the PS3 like Space simulation games (Darkstar broken alliance)

in fact the PS3 had MORE exclusive shooters than the 360

You also failed to mention the Hardware advantages the 360 had over the PS3 like Hardware up-scaling and the ability to install your games to the HDD.

Not to mention the fact that not only did the 360 have 300 more games than the PS3 including more exclusive games but also more higher rated games.

Xbox 360 games=1,137

Exclusive=187

Ps3 games=812

Exclusive=150

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_360_games

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_games

The Ps3 had the advantage in Hardware reliability and Graphics but the 360 beat it in everything else, More games, more high scoring games, More genres, Better online and cheaper.

the one thing i will give a huge nod in SONY's direction for is PS+ , Flat out the best service for people running on a budget, it's way cheaper to pay a small subscription fee a month as opposed to buying Full price games at 45 quid a pop and gives people on limited budgets the chance to play games they would probably otherwise not be able to afford, Batting for disadvantaged and poor people is ALWAYS a HUGE win in my book.

The main reason i could never have owned a PS3 over the 360 though was WRPG's to be honest, it's my favorite genre and the 360 had more games in that genre and thats my reason to choosing the 360 as the better console

PS3. All psx, ps2(all on some models), great 2 to 4 game hd remakes, psn games, old arcade games, bluray, ps3 games, supports ps2 controllers, bluetooth controllers, etc. 360 doesn't reach that.

Pre-2008: X360 was a fresh and exciting console when it came out. Introduced lots of amazing franchises (Gears, Halo, Mass Effect) and had an incredible online experience with lots of innovative concepts that were executed beautifully (XBLA, Achievements, Party System, etc..).

Then Don Mattrick happened. Long story short, he took the helm at xbox and ran the brand into the ground, ruining it for generations to come.

Post-2008: PS3 picked up some steam with some exciting single player games, but it was too little too late as the whole generation lost its flare & freshness factor at that point and felt stale and at end of its life cycle.

So overall, the better console was X360 imo

On the other side, 360 had Bayonettawhich was almost unplayable on PS3.

after one update (option to install game data into hardrive) ....... Bayonetta is 100% perfect on PS3 ....

I liked the 360 at first...but I was late to the game last gen since I played on PC mostly.

But towards the end (about 3 years before the PS4/X1) I went PS3. They had more exclusives that I wanted....and had more exclusives worth a dam coming out.

I swear at one time there was Fable, Forza and a bunch of Kinect games and that was it.....it was fucking pathetic.

Legitimized indies....

On consoles maybe. They were already a thing on PC.

really? what were the big indie smash hits on steam before 2008?

I don't remember what they were but I remember PC gamers loved to brag about them. Lol

On topic I loved all of my gen 7 systems about equally except for the DS which was my favorite.

PS3
Wipeout
Ratchet and Clank
Infamous
Little Big Planet

360
Halo3
Gears
Fable

Wii
Brawl
Mario Kart
Wii sports

PSP and DS have too many to list.

ok, but are you seriously suggesting that indies would be as big as they are today without games like braid, shadow complex and the dozens of great indie games MS introduced? steam is a big reason why indies have risen so far as well but MS gave them the initial boost.

Xbox helped. I think it would have happened regardless though.
