If Windows 11 takes up so much CPU performance that only newer versions of architecturally identical CPUs will be supported, then I would expect a sizeable performance loss in gaming when more overhead is going to the operating system. This means that next gen games probably will run better using DXVK and Proton on Linux, than native Windows 11.

Yup, it's time to make a fullscale switch to Linux.

Or, as others have stated it's to force people to buy new computers, in which case, **** M$, I'm still going to switch to Linux.

You seriously need an upgrade! At least CPUs are easy to come by so you should be fine. Intel or AMD Ryzen on you're next upgrade?

trying to figure out if I need to buy this TPM2.0 module thingymajig for my X570 mobo (which seems ridiculous, given how new it is) or if enabling this ftpm or whatever in bios on the ryzen 3600 is sufficient. Kinda sketched...

Honestly for the longest time I had trouble convincing myself to upgrade the cpu since it is so good even today, it's an i7-4770 btw. But after some games started recommending more than this I finally made up my mind for sure that I need to upgrade. My ram though has been the easiest reason for an upgrade (8gb DDR3 @800Mhz), that alone makes me the joke of the masterace 😅

I've been leaning more towards Ryzen lately, but who knows if Intel gets something competent out I might check that out instead.

The explanation is basically TPM is a module that prevents the user from doing certain things on their own hardware, according to a set of rules decided by the developer of the software you are running.

No need to watch a video just to explain that. Just installs a nanny on your PC.

Some folks may want more than an oversimplification of TPM.

What's the point of 11 anyway? 10 at least offered (artificially locked) Dx12, but why would anyone upgrade to a shittier version of Win10?

To play games that require artificially locked DX12.1, duh.

I know 5000 series CPU have fTPM, enable in bios. Probs the same for intel cpu. Anything which does not will need the module.

Ebay have now started scalping them.

Trick it into thinking Frankenstein is a different machine every time you run it and run it on a loop rofl.

Intel at this point has nothing competing with the latest Ryzen CPU and I'll never go back to Intel at all. I just find Ryzen to be a hella better CPU and my latest upgrade 5600X is freaking amazing, it handles everything I throw at it...besides MSFS but that game is CPU intense. The 5600X is going for $300 as of now, just in case you want to check it out.

looks like my 1500X in my desktop could be a problem. i was planning to upgrade anyway though (would already have upgraded if the market didn't go nuts).

As long as that TPM stuff doesnt interfere with dual booting then its not a huge deal. a bit of a shame to leave old but still capable hardware behind but, from a gaming standpoint, a game making use of all the new DX12U toys is also probably going to struggle on first gen ryzen and 6th gen intel processors anyway due to it just being demanding.

Windows 10 will still get patches until 2025 so no major rush.

I really wish Steam machines took off so that I can switch over completely to Linux. That's also the only advantage that I kinda want Stadia to succeed so that Linux will get more games.

@davillain-: Oh Ryzen is leagues above anything Intel has to show atm. Intel has had a change of leadership recently and people are optimistic that this would translate into more compelling upgrades for their CPUs. I personally don't know about that but whenever the time comes I'll definitely check if Intel got any better and who knows... if it's worth it I might stick with Intel!
